Mercedes Leads Lincoln’s Effort in Road Match at Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. – Yvette Mercedes (Columbia, MD/) delivered an efficient offensive performance as the Lincoln University (Pa.) volleyball team continued its early-season development Wednesday evening against Caldwell University at the Newman Center.

The Lions (0-4) fell in three sets, 25-8, 25-13 and 25-13, against the Cougars.

Inside the Numbers
The Lions finished with 15 kills, 14 assists, four service aces and 18 digs. Caldwell improved to 2-2, while Lincoln moved to 0-4.
Mercedes led Lincoln with eight kills while committing just two errors on 16 attacks, finishing with a team-best .375 hitting percentage. She also contributed three digs and accounted for eight points.

How it Happened
Lincoln showed early fight in the opening set after falling behind 3-0. The Lions responded with a 5-0 run highlighted by two kills from Audreynette Lydgate (Bowie, MD/Charles Herbert Flowers HS) and a service ace from Charly Manley (Upper Marlboro, MD/Frederick Douglass HS), giving Lincoln a 5-3 advantage.

The Lions continued to apply pressure from the service line throughout the match. Charly Manley (Upper Marlboro, MD/Frederick Douglass HS) recorded two aces, while Donavyn Morris (Chester, PA/) and Alia Abdurrahman (Columbia, MD/) each added one. Manley also directed the offense with 12 assists and contributed one kill.

Niana Coar (Aberdeen, MD/) provided an efficient spark with two kills on five attempts and no errors for a .400 hitting percentage. Lydgate added two kills and two assists.

Defensively, Morris led Lincoln with five digs. Yvette Mercedes (Columbia, MD/) followed with three, while Elise Carter (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna HS) and Liani Figueroa (Brooklyn,NY/) collected two apiece.

Up Next
Lincoln will return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Lions travel to Wilmington, Delaware, to face Goldey-Beacom College. The match is scheduled for noon.
