LU Lions Women's Basketball Takes a 70-61 Loss to the VSU Trojans

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA (February 10, 2024)- The Lincoln University women's basketball team took a 70-61 loss to the Trojans of Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon in a CIAA Northern Division matchup. Despite the loss, LU outscored VSU in the second quarter. The loss moves the Lions to an 10-12 record on the season, 6-8 in the CIAA.

FIRST HALF
  • Despite going up against the CIAA's top ranked team, the LU Lions had a strong start to the contest.
  • The Lions took an early lead, securing the first basket of the contest; a 3-pointer by Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep).
  • Fighting to remain in the game, Lincoln stayed in lead changing distance with the visiting Trojans, until they pulled away in the final minutes of the first quarter.
  • At the end of the 10:00, LU trailed, 28-17.
  • The Lions bounced back in the second quarter, outscoring VSU, 15-7.
  • Finding their offensive and defensive rhythm, Lincoln closed the scoring gap, only trailing by 3 points (35-32) going into halftime.

SECOND HALF
  • Although the visiting Trojans dominated the third and fourth quarters, the LU Lions stayed on their heels, forcing VSU to play hard.
  • Despite the hard-fought battle, the Lincoln Lions took a 70-61 loss.
 
LION LEADERS
  • D'Ayzha Atkinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) led the Lions with 21 points and 9 rebounds.
  • Coming off the bench and scoring 10 points for LU was Aniya Gibson.
 
UP NEXT
The Lions will travel to Elizabeth City, NC to take on the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on Wednesday, February 14. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
