Aces were wild as the Lincoln University women's volleyball team established a new school record for their NCAA Division II era during a straight-set victory over Cheyney in the Battle of the First Wednesday inside Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.

Lincoln recorded 26 aces over the three sets to post the 25-8, 25-10, 25-14 victory.

Erica Taylor (Romulus, MI/Romulus Summit Academy) finished with a career-high eight aces, five coming in the opening set as the Lions scored the first 10 points of the match. The scoring bonanza continued to 18 of the first 20 points and concluded with the 25-8 first-set win.

In all, six Lincoln student-athletes recorded aces as freshman
Laila Newborn (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) finished with five, sophomore
Jaida Lumpkin (Middletown, Del./Middletown) and freshman
Janaa Smith (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) totaled four, sophomore
Haley Loper (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Technical) recorded three, and freshman
Kendra Williams (Dover, Del./Dover) added two.

Lincoln took early control of the second set by scoring 15 of the first 20 points, seven of the 15 coming via serve ace.

While Cheyney was able to take a brief lead in the third final by scoring the first point, the Lions claimed control by scoring seven of the next eight points. The Wolves were able to stay within striking distance, but with Lumpkin serving, Lincoln rattled off eight consecutive points to improve to 2-0.

Loper led the offensive attack with 11 kills on 17 attempts and four errors for a .412 hitting percentage, while Newborn was phenomenal statistically with eight kills on nine attempts and zero errors for a .889 hitting percentage.

The setting duo of Lumpkin and Smith finished with 14 and nine assists, respectively. Defensively, sophomore
Mariah Webster (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech/) led the team with eight digs.

Lincoln (2-0 overall) travels to West Chester Saturday for a tri-match. Lincoln will play NYACK at 2 p.m., followed by a match against the host Golden Rams at 4 p.m.
