DOVER, Del. – The Lincoln University football team opened the 2022 campaign with a 34-0 non-conference loss to Division I Delaware State Saturday inside DSU's Alumni Stadium.
Lincoln kept in contact with Delaware State, trailing just 17-0 following three quarters. However, a couple of short drives and a crucial penalty on fourth down enabled the Hornets to strike for 17 fourth-quarter points.
Offensively, LU was limited to 67 yards in the first half as Delaware State led 10-0 at the break.
Freshman quarterback
Isaiah Freeman (Chester, PA/STEM Academy) took over the reins of the offense in the second half, and the offense showed some life. The Lions tallied 138 yards in the second half as Freeman was 12-of-19 for 130 yards.
Junior Dah'Mear Triplett finished with six receptions for 64 yards, while senior
Rashon Cooke (Sharon Hill, Pa./Lower Merion) tallied 40 yards on four catches. Senior
Samuel Jordan (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) led the rushing attack with 33 yards on five attempts.
Defensively, senior
Mike Johnson (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) led the way with 10 tackles, six of them solos. Senior
Kai Gray (Neward, N.J./Saint Peters Prep), in his Lincoln debut, added eight tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. Redshirt freshman
Jahad Green (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) totaled six tackles, including one tackle for loss.
Lincoln (0-1) travels to Wilberforce, Ohio for a non-conference meeting with Central State University.
