Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB falls into first-place tie

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Lincoln University women's basketball team fell into a first-place tie of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association action with a 62-52 loss to Elizabeth City State Wednesday.

Leading by three points heading into the fourth quarter, the Lions struggled offensively missing the first 14 shots of the quarter. By the time senior Shantel Cheeks (Washington D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy (Harcum College)) drilled a three-pointer with a minute remaining, the LU deficit had grown to 11 points.

Elizabeth City State came out the gates on fire, scoring 12 of the game's 14 points, forcing a Lincoln timeout. Early in the second quarter, the Orange and Blue trailed by 10 points (22-12). The Lions finally claimed the lead on a Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep) lay-up with 2:42 remaining. LU took the one-point lead into halftime.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School) to open the third quarter pushed the Lincoln lead to a game-high seven points. However, the Vikings scored nine of the next 12 points to pull to within a single point. Seemingly the momentum of clawing back into the game carried over and ECSU pulled out the win.

Young led a trio of double-figure scorers with 14 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three assists, while Cheeks added 11 points and four boards. Freshman Jaleesa Lanier (Easton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) tacked on 10 points.

Lincoln (16-7 overall, 9-4 CIAA, 5-2 North) returns home 4 p.m. Saturday, hosting Virginia Union in the annual Play for Kay event.
