WBB secures top seed

Four players reached double figures as the Lincoln University women's basketball team clinched the top seed in the upcoming Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament with the 77-62 victory over Virginia State Saturday inside Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.

Senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) led the way with 18 points, while senior Joy Morton (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) tallied a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Kryshell Gordy (Chester, Pa./Ursuline Academy (Del.)) came up one rebound short of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Shantel Cheeks (Washington D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy (Harcum College)) finished with 11 points. The quartet were joined by Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School), Jeana Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) and Shakira Edwards (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) to be honored during the postgame Senior Day festivities.

Lincoln scored eight of the game's first 10 points and really never looked back. The Lions led by 10 at the end of the first quarter and at halftime. Virginia State pulled to as close as six after scoring the first four points of the third quarter, but the Lions were not going to be denied from claiming the tournament's top seed.

By the time the five seniors left to a standing ovation by the fans in attendance with a little more than three minutes remaining, the Lincoln had ballooned to 22 points and the only question remaining was the final score.

Lincoln kicks off its tournament run 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Royal Farms Arena against the winner of Tuesday's Winston-Salem/St. Augustine's game.
