ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – One streak continued, and one came to an end Saturday for the Lincoln University football team. Unfortunately, for the Lions, neither was in their favor as they fell to Elizabeth City State, 21-19, in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association action.
The loss snapped Lincoln's two-game road winning streak and it was the fifth consecutive win by the home team in the series.
Freshman
Isaiah Freeman (Chester, PA/STEM Academy) engineered another late-game drive that put Lincoln in a position to force overtime. He was 5-for-5 for 84 yards, including a big 47-yard completion to freshman
Malachi Langley (Chester, Pa./Chester). The scoring drive was capped by a 14-yard scoring strike to freshman
Eli Riddick (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eramus Hall).
However, pressure up the middle and a deflected pass prevented the two-point conversion to land in the hands of a wide-open receiver.
Lincoln's final gasp, a bounding ball on the onside kick, was eventually recovered by the Vikings to secure the win.
For the second consecutive game, the Lions drove the length of the field on their first possession for a touchdown. Lincoln marched 77 yards on just five plays, mostly on the ground, but the final play was a 22-yard pass to sophomore
Davon Allen (Washington, D.C./Anacostia).
Elizabeth City finally got on the board with a little more than a minute remaining in the half.
The Lions were able to answer following a nice kickoff return by redshirt freshman
Jeffrey Williams III (Braddock, Pa. /Woodland Hills). Freshman
Joseph Price (Kissimmee, Fla./Celebration) sent Lincoln to the locker room with the lead with a 24-yard field goal.
ECSU took the lead on its third drive of the game with an 80-yard touchdown and following a penalty, the Viking converted the two-point conversion.
Lincoln answered on the ensuing drive with a 21-yard field goal. The Lions appeared to be in prime position to seize momentum, but the Vikings scored the eventual game-winning touchdown – a 25-yard strike on third and 20. Senior
Kai Gray (Newark, N.J./Saint Peters Prep) blocked the extra point that enable LU to have life at the end of the game.
Although Lincoln converted three of its four red zone opportunities, they only found the end zone once. ECSU scored touchdowns on both of their trips.
Freeman finished 16-of-25 for 284 yards and two touchdowns. He found seven different receivers for his 16 completions with Langley hauling in a team-high 84 yards on a pair of catches. Sophomore
Drew Stephens (Newark, N.J./Abraham Clark) and freshman
Antwain Banks (Middle River, Md./Edgewood) had four catches each for 83 yards and 42 yards, respectively.
Sophomore
Amir Gerald (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) surpassed 100 yards rushing for the second time this season, amassing 115 yards on 17 attempts.
Defensively, senior
Mike Johnson (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) recorded 11 tackles, eight of which were solo, with 2.5 tackles for loss and a half sack. Junior Malik Molloy finished with seven tackles, 2.0 for loss, and 1.5 sacks.
Redshirt
Derrick McCoy (Bridgeton, N.J./Bridgeton) was another disruptor along the line with 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, five tackles, and a pass breakup.
Lincoln (2-4 overall, 1-3 CIAA) hosts unbeaten Virginia Union noon Saturday.
