Volleyball opens CIAA action

The Lincoln University volleyball team opened Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play with a straight-set loss (25-20, 25-19, 25-12) to Shaw Thursday at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shaw used a pair of scoring runs in the first set to secure the win. The Bears scored six consecutive points to turn an 11-9 Lincoln lead into a 15-11 deficit. 
  • With Mariah Webster (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) serving, the Lions tallied six straight points to tie the game at 18. 
  • The Bears finished the first set by scoring seven of the last nine points. 
  • For the second consecutive set, Shaw finished the set by scoring seven of the final nine points to claim the victory. 
  • Lincoln fell behind early in the third set as SU scored 12 of the first 15 points and 18 of the first 22 points. 
  • The Lions, with Erinn Taylor (Romulus, MI/Romulus Summit Academy) scoring, scored six straight points to pull to within eight, but ultimately, they lost the deciding set. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman Haley Loper (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Technical) finished with eight kills on 26 attempts with six digs and three block assists. 
  • For the first time this season, Lincoln used one setter and freshman Jaida Lumpkin (Middletown, Del./Middletown) finished with 13 assists and a team-high eight digs. 
  • Junior Kaiya Lewis (Queens, N.Y./Queens Preparatory Academy) finished with a team-high four block assists to go along with five kills.  
  • Webster added seven digs in the contest. 
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Lincoln (0-6 overall, 0-1 CIAA) travels to Virginia State 6 p.m. Monday for another CIAA match.
