WBB Preview: Winston-Salem State

The Lincoln University women's basketball team, in the middle of three games in five days, hosts Winston-Salem State 2 p.m. Saturday in CIAA action at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.

SERIES HISTORY
After winning six of the last eight games, and three of the last four, Lincoln has narrowed the margin in the all-time series. The Lions trail WSSU by the slimmest of margins at 7-6. 
 
I BRY-LIEVE
Fifth-year senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin), a career 1,000-point scorer, is coming off a career-high 33 points in Thursday's victory over Johnson C. Smith. She is second in the CIAA with 17.1 points per game and leads the conference, making 89.1 percent (57-of-64) of her free throws this season. She is also first in the CIAA with 2.1 three-pointers per game.
 
Coming into the season, the guard was named preseason All-CIAA as a backcourt selection in the conference vote of head coaches and sports information personnel.  

HIGH POWERED OFFENSE
After averaging 88 points over the last two games, Lincoln leads the CIAA in scoring with 73.8 points per game. The Lions are fourth in scoring margin at plus-9.9. LU is one of four CIAA schools with a positive scoring margin. 

FROM DOWNTOWN
Lincoln is tied for the conference lead with 5.2 three-pointers per game and a league-high 57 total three-pointers. 

VARIABLE STARTERS
For the first time since the opening two games of the season, the Lincoln University women's basketball team started the same lineup in back-to-back games. The starting five of Jaleesa Lanier (Easton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin), Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School), Jeana Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland), and Krysell Gordy were the seventh different starting lineup in 12 games for the Lions. 
 
Fifth-year senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) and has started 11 of those 12 games. Three different players - Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep), Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School), and Lanier - have all started at point guard this season. 

HALFTIME ADJUSTMENTS
Lincoln is dominating its opponents in the third quarter, outscoring them 249 (22.63 points per game) to 165 (15 points per game). 

HITTING THE GLASS
Lincoln has pulled down at least 20 offensive rebounds in three of the last five games, including a season-high 28 against Jefferson. On the season, the Lions have five games of 20 or more offensive rebounds and are 3-2 in those contests. 


SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Winston-Salem State will be playing its first game in two weeks when the Rams step onto the court Saturday at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium. They are coming off a 93-90 non-conference victory over Salem on December 4.

Coming at 4-3 on the season, two of the Rams' three losses have come at the hands of No. 1 Alaska-Anchorage.  

WSSU has three players averaging double figures led by Amaya Tucker, who is scoring 13.3 points per game while shooting a team-high 41 percent (9-of-22) from three-point range. Tucker is also leading the team with 17 steals and is second with 13 assists.

Melody Prichard, one of four players to play in all seven games, is scoring 11.4 points, while Brooke Spaulding is adding 11.2 points per game. Kendra Ross is pulling down a team-high 7.3 boards per contest, while Hailey Gipson is leading the team with 19 assists.
