WBB storms back in battle of Lions

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Down 15 points at halftime with a short-handed roster, the Lincoln University women's basketball team came back for the 72-67 non-conference victory over Georgian Court Friday at the GCU Wellness Center.

Fifth-year senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) kicked off an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter with a three-point play and junior Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School) capped the aforementioned run with a three-point play to give Lincoln the five-point lead with 3:29 remaining. However, Georgian Court – which held the lead for the majority of the game – quickly answered with five points of its own to turn the 40-minute game into a two-minute bout.

It was a one-sided final bout as Lincoln scored seven of the final nine points to secure the victory.

Things looked bleak coming out of the locker room as Lincoln trailed by double figures while shooting 22 percent from the floor.

But things quickly changed, and the all-might momentum was now wearing the navy blue Under Armour uniforms.

Brown connected on the team's first three-pointer of the game to kick start a 10-0 run that lead to a GCU timeout, and the LU deficit was quickly down to five. The Orange and Blue eventually clawed to within one point with two minutes remaining in the quarter, but back-to-back three-pointers stemmed the tide and allowed the home-standing Lions to breathe a little easier, temporarily.

Lincoln scored 10 of the next 12 points, spanning the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth quarter, to take its first lead of the game. While the lead changed hands three times in the fourth quarter, LU was seemingly in control.

LU held the 18-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the second half, including 11 alone in the fourth quarter, and scored nine of its 15 second-chance points in the fourth quarter.

Brown exploded for 16 of her 19 points in the second half with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while junior Jeana Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) finished with a season-high 18 points and six rebounds. Weatherspoon has now reached double figures in four of the last five games.
Junior Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School) came off the bench for 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Senior Kryshell Gordy (Chester, Pa./Ursuline Academy (Del.)) pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds, reaching double-digit boards for the second time this season.
Lincoln (6-3), winners in four of its last five games, has a very quick turnaround – hosting Bloomfield 2 p.m. Saturday.
