Haley's Comet: Loper with career-high 19 kills

Lincoln goes 1-2 in CIAA Round-Up

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Lincoln University volleyball team claimed its first win of the season as the Lions went 1-2 during the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Round-Up this past week.

In Lincoln's straight-set (25-14, 25-20, 25-11) victory over Livingstone, freshman Haley Loper (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Technical) turned in the best performance of her young career. The outside hitter finished with a career-high 19 kills on 37 attempts with just five errors for a .378 hitting percentage. The 19 kills accounted for 68 percent of the team's offensive production as Lincoln finished with 28 kills in the match.

Propelling the offense was freshman Jaida Lumpkin (Middletown, Del./Middletown), who finished with a career-high 22 assists, and freshman Mariah Webster (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) tallied a career-high 19 digs.

Lincoln opened the round-up Saturday with a straight-set (25-11, 25-14, 25-21) loss to Saint Augustine's.

Junior Kaiya Lewis (Queens, N.Y./Queens Preparatory Academy) finished with six kills on 15 attempts with two kills to go along with a solo block and two block assists. Loper added four kills with six digs, while Lumpkin finished with eight assists and seven digs.  Webster once again led the team, finishing with 10 digs.

In the second game Saturday, the Lions dropped a straight-set decision (25-12, 25-6, 25-22) to Fayetteville State.

Lewis, for the second straight match, led the team with eight kills on 19 attempts with four errors, while freshman Erica Taylor (Romulus, MI/Romulus Summit Academy) added five kills. Lumpkin had 13 assists with six digs, while Webster finished with 14 digs.
