Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Young's 23 Points Leads Lions to Ninth Straight Win

Team Ties Record for Most Wins in a Season

DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) turned in one of the best all-around performances this season for the Lincoln University women's basketball team as the Lions extended their winning streak to nine games with an 81-50 win over Saint Augustine's University Wednesday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Lions improve to 22-3 overall, equaling the school record for wins in a season set back in 2014-15.  Lincoln is also 11-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games and finished the home portion of their season with a school record 14-1.  The Falcons fall to 8-15 overall and 3-10 in league contests.

Young scored a game high 23 points on a season-high nine field goals (9-11, 81.8%) and added five free throws.  The senior guard filled the stat sheet by grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out six assists and recording five steals, all game-highs.DeAshia Young

Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin (Nyack)) joined young in double figures with 13 points (4-5 FG, 2-2 3FG, 3-3 FT).  Skydajah Patterson (Bronx, N.Y./) and Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) added nine and eight points respectively.

Young started things off with a short jumper as the Lions scored the first 14 points of the game and never looked back, opening up a 20-9 lead after the first ten minutes of action.

A Murray layup with 5:52 left in the second quarter gave the Lions a 13-point lead before the falcons scored five straight to pull within eight 24-16 with 4:46 left.    Lincoln closed out the quarter on a 16-4 run to lead 40-20 at halftime.  Young and Patterson combined for 12 of the 16 points in the run.

The Falcons got as close as 17 in the third quarter before the Lions produced another 14-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 60-29 with 1:02 remaining.  Six different Lincoln players put points on the board during the course of the run.  SAU's Angela Caraballo broke the run with a basket at 0:39 to end the run.

The Falcons cut the lead to 22 at 646 with 4:36 left in the game.  This would be as close as they would come as the Lions defense allowed just four more points while the offense closed out the game with a 13-4 run, capped by a Shantel Cheeks (Washington D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy (Harcum College)) three-point basket.

Milequa Eason led the Falcons with 11 points while Shankia Clark added eight and a team high seven rebounds.

Lincoln's 48.3% (28-58) shooting effort on the night was the Lions best shooting effort in a CIAA game this season.  LU's defense also held the Falcons to just 31.7% (20-63) shooting from the field.  Lincoln also took full advantage of 26 Falcon turnovers, scoring 30 points off the visitors' miscues.  The Lions held a 44-34 rebounding advantage, marking the 19th time this season Lincoln has outrebounded an opponent and is 17-2 in such contests.   The Lions also outshot the Falcons on the free throw line making 21 of 28 shots to SAU's 6 of 13.

The Lions will close out the remainder of their regular season on the road, starting with a game at Virginia State University on February 13.  Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. in Ettrick, Virginia.
