The Lincoln University women's soccer team honored their seniors Saturday afternoon as they played Saint Thomas Aquinas College at Lions Stadium. The Spartans jumped out to an early lead and pulled away with a 9-1 win.
Lincoln falls to 1-9 overall and 0-5 in East Coast Conference (ECC) games. STAC improves to 1-10-1 and 1-3-1 in ECC games
Five seniors were recognized for their accomplishments as members of the women's soccer team at haftime of the game. The five are as follows:
Cydney Berry- transferred to Lincoln after spending two years at Monroe College in New York. She has appeared in 19 games as a defender over the two seasons before an injury ended her season last month.
Catera Simpson (Clinton, Md./Surratsville) – Has appeared in 22 games as a defender over the past two seasons after transferring in from Northampton C.C. Recorded an assist last season against Mercy College…
Anonda O'Brien (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) – A four-year player for the Lions who started 42 games as a defender in her first three seasons before an injury ended her 2019 campaign. O'Brien is a Dean's List student at Lincoln.
Tara Brookins (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) – One of three four-year players being honored by the Lions. Brookins season was also cut short by an injury this year. She appeared in 42 games over her career, mostly as a mid fielder. Scored three goals in 2017 and one her freshman year in 2016.
Lena Rodriguez (Lockport, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) – A four year starting goalkeeper for Lincoln, Lena has played every minute of the season in goal this year. She currently holds a total of eight Lincoln single game, season or career goalkeeping records and can add 1-3 more before she finishes her career. Over her four seasons she has played more games and more minutes than any goalkeeper in the history of the program. She is the first Lions goalkeeper to have 500 or more career saves and will finish her career ranked in the top ten all-time in every single goalkeeping statistical category.
The three injured seniors (Berry, Brookins and O'Brien) took to the field for one last ceremonial opening kick before being replaced.
STAC jumped out to a 5-0 lead before
Kenya Davis' (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) putback got the Lions on the board in the 43
rd minute. For Davis it is her seventh goal of the season.
Tamara Evans (Clayton, Del./Smyrna) had the assist.
The Spartans scored four more times in the second half to complete their scoring.
Rodriguez made 17 saves in the net for Lincoln adding to her NCAA Division II leading save total and now has 151 on the season.
The women's soccer team is back in action on Thursday, October 24, 2019 when they host Goldey-Beacom College at Lions Stadium. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
