Box Score Brianna Logan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley (Siena)) recorded four assists to break Lincoln's single season assist record but the Lincoln University women's basketball team dropped a 64-56 decision to Virginia State University in the regular season finale for both teams in Ettrick, Virginia on Saturday
The Lions finish the regular season with a 16-10 overall mark and a 10-6 record in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games. Virginia State improves to 22-4 overall and 12-4 in league play. Within the North division the Lions finish with a 5-5 mark within the division, forging a three-way tie for the third seed with Chowan University and Bowie State University. The Lions swept the season series against Bowie State and split the series with Chowan with each team winning on the others court. The tournament seeds will be announced later tonight.
Logan's four assists give her 113 for the season, breaking the mark of 109 set by Chanelle Harris in the 2007-08 season. Brianna entered the game tied with Harris and broke the mark when she dished off to
McKenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) for a three-pointer with 2:41 left in the first quarter. The basket gave the Lions an 11-10 lead at the time. Logan would finish the game with 11 points and added a steal to go along with her four assists.
Michelle Fitzgerald (Baltimore, Md./Md. Academy of Tech & Health Science (N.C. A & T)) was the only other Lions player to reach double figures with 20 points. She also grabbed ten rebounds to notch her eighth double-double of the season. Spencer came off the bench to chip in nine points while
Shecquan Bailey (Salisbury, Md./Snow Hill (Baltimore City C.C.)) filled in the stat sheet with six points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The Trojans scored the final five points of the first quarter after the Spencer three and pushed their lead to double digits 26-15 before settling in for a nine point lead at the half, 31-22.
Virginia State extended their lead to as high as 16 points late in the third quarter and Lincoln trailed 55-42 heading into the final stanza. VSU led by 15 when the Lions started to surge, scoring nine straight points with Logan scoring six of the nine and close within six 59-53 with 2:23 left. After a VSU basket, Logan added a traditional three-point play to pull the lions within five with just under a minute remaining. VSU's Aja Robertson made three of four free throws in the final 48 seconds to seal the win for the Trojans.
Chrisanna Green led the Trojans with 18 points and nine rebounds while Alexis Smith chipped in 17 points.
The Lions finished the game shooting 29.6% from the field (16-54) and also struggled at the free throw line (60%, 21-35). VSU shot 38.9% from the field (21-54) and 60.7% (17-28) from the free throw line. Lincoln outrebounded the Trojans 42-32.
Lincoln's next game will be the opening round game at the CIAA Tournament on Tuesday at the Bojangles Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. Opponent and time to be determined.
