Lions Hit the Century Mark in big Win over Wildcats

Five players reached double figure scoring as the Lincoln University Women's Basketball team set a program record, scoring 100 points in a game in for the first time in the 49-year history of the program, defeating Wilmington University 100-65 at the Complex in Newark, Delaware Monday afternoon.
 
The Lions improve to 6-8 on the season with the win.  In recording a 100-point game for the first time in program history, the team eclipses their previous high mark of 96 points, achieved twice, most recently against Wilmington in November 2015 and first reached against Christendom college during the 2000-01 season. The Wildcats drop to 1-10.
 
DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) made her return to the Lions lineup after missing the last three game and led LU with 19 points (7-15 FG) and seven assists.  Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) added 17 points (6-13 FG, 32-6 3FG) as did DeeDee Irwin (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) (4-8 FG, 6-6 FT).  Irwin also had a team high four steals.  Jada Queen (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) filled out the stat sheet with 12 points (5-7 FG) and team highs for rebounds (8) and blocked shots (four).  Jamari Tillman (Louisville, Ky./Doss) rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points (4-6 FG, 3-4 3FG).
 
Nyree Grant led the Wildcats with 20 points (6-7 FG, 8-8 FT) and Macy Robinson chipped in 17 points, nine rebounds and a game-high five steals.
 
Lincoln led the contest wire-to-wire, with Queen and Young scoring the first two baskets of the game as the Lions pulled ahead to a double digit lead just six minutes into the game, 19-18 on a pair of  free throws from Queen.
 
Irwin took over in the second quarter, scoring 12 of her 17 points, half from a pair of three point field goals and the other six from a perfect 6-6 effort from the foul line.  Irwin's second three-ball gave Lincoln their biggest lead of the period at 16 33-17 at the 6:31 mark, which was the same margin as both teams headed into the locker room at the break with the Lions leading 45-29
 
The Lions connected on three straight three-pointers in the opening two minutes of the third quarter with Murray scoring two of them and Tillman the other starting a 17-3 tear over the first 4:27 of the period to push their lead to 30, 62-32.  The Wildcats could get no closer than 25 for the rest of the game as the Lions continued to push their offense , bringing their lead to its highest point 35 in the final minutes on free throws from Dominique Allen (Upper Marlboro, Md./Takoma Academy) and Shakira Edwards (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech).  Edwards made the first of two free throws with 24 seconds left to give the Lions exactly 100 points for the contest.
 
Lincoln shot 48.6% (34-70) from the field; 46.2% (12-26)from three point range and 69% (20-29) from the free throw line.  The Wildcats shot 35.7% (20-56) from the field, 14.3% (2-14) from three-point range and 67.6% (23-34) from the free throw line.  The Lions had a slight edge 43-40 on the glass while committing nine fewer turnovers (16 to 25).  Lincoln scored 26 points off 25 WU miscues while the Wildcats scored just 12 points off the Lions16 turnovers. 
 
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 5, 2019 when they host Shepherd University in a non-conference regional tilt at Manuel Rivero Hall.  Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
