Game Recap: Football |

Espinoza Has Career Game in Lions Loss at Chowan

Vincent Espinoza (Madera, Calif /Madera (West Hills)) threw for a career high 375 yards and three touchdowns but the Lincoln University football team lost their final game of the season 56-27 to Chowan University at Garrison Stadium in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.

Espinoza became just the fourth Lincoln player to throw three or more touchdown passes in a game, joining Doug  Cook (5 vs. Livingstone, 2012 plus four other times), Laquan  Williams (vs. Chowan 2010) and Brandon  Austin (vs. Southern Virginia, 2009).  His 375 yards is the third highest single game effort in program history behind Cook's two 400+ yard games in 2012.  The senior quarterback completed 32 of 57 passes on the afternoon.

In addition to his 375 yards passing, Espinoza also led the Lions in rushing with 62 net yards on ten carries, giving him a total of 438 yards of total offense, second highest in program history behind Cook's 466.  The bulk of the rushing yardage came of a 48-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Reginald Mays Jr. (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin (Frostburg)) and Carlos Croslin (Baltimore, Md. /Frederick Douglass (Globe Tech) ) were Espinoza's favorite targets on the day with each catching nine receptions and scoring a touchdown apiece.  Dashawn Brice (Brooklyn, N.Y. /Boys and Girls (Virginia State)) caught the Lions other touchdown catch.

On the defensive side, Devon Cathcart (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) racked up tackles left and right, notching 18 on the day, the fourth highest single game total in program history and one shy of equaling the school record.  Dominique Rogers (Danbury, Conn /Henry Abbott Tech (Monroe College)) added eight tackles, including five for loss.  Deion Miller (Sayreville, N.J /Jersey Coast Academy) and Vincent Woodard (Accokeek, Md. /Gwynn Park) each recovered a fumble while Kendall Brooks (Washington, DC /Bell ) recorded an interception.  Solomon Bassett (Fort Worth, Texas/Boswell) and Adekunle Adefemi (Philadelphia, Pa. /Winslow Twp. (Valley Forge Military Coll.)) had a shared sack.

Freshman Tayonte McKenzie (Washington, D.C. /Bell ) notched his third 100+ yard return game with 104 yards in kickoff returns.

Bryce Witt led Chowan with 271 yards passing and five touchdown tosses while Tyrell Freeman ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

It was the Lions who scored first on a 49-yard Espinoza to Brice touchdown pass with 9:09 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.  Chowan struck for two scores before quarter's end one of a Freeman run and the other a Witt pass to Tony Baker to lead 14-7.

Espinoza hooked up with Croslin for a 14 yard score just 2:43 into the second quarter to tie the game at 14-14.  Chowan scored on their next possession to retake the lead but the Lions showed resilience and Espinoza showed off his scrambling ability with a 48 yard run for the game-tying score at the 9:21 mark of the second quarter, evening things up at 21-21.

The Hawks made adjustments at halftime and came out firing, scoring twice in the third quarter to take control of the game with Witt completing two touchdown tosses, including an 87-yarder to Baker.

Chowan scored three more times in the fourth before Espinoza connected with Mays for his final touchdown toss of the day, a 10-yard toss as time expired, making the final score 56-27.

The Lions conclude their season with a 1-9 overall record, 1-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.   Chowan finishes at 5-4 overall and 4-2 in league play.
