The Lincoln University women's volleyball team played an intense four-set match against Chowan University Friday night at Manuel Rivero Hall, taking the first set and making the Hawks earn every point. Chowan came back however to take the next three sets and win the match 3-1.
Lincoln took the first 25-22, marking the first time the Lions have won a set against the dominant Hawks in the history of the series between the two schools, dating back to 2008. Chowan rallied to even the match at one-set apiece with a 25-18 win in the second set.
In the third set the Lions nearly pulled out another set win before falling 25-23. Chowan then closed out the match in the fourth set winning 25-16.
The loss drops Lincoln's record to 1-21 overall and 1-15 in Central Intercollegaite Athlertic Association matches. Chowan improves to 9-14 overall and 9-5 in league play.
Janae Stackhouse (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore PolyTech) and
Tierra Russaw (Westland , Mich./Summit Academy) led the Lions with eight kills apiece.
Kaiya Lewis (Woodhaven, N.Y./Queens Preparatory Academy) and
Amanda Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park Slope Collegiate) each added seven kills.
Alisa Foster (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) set up the Lion offense with 28 assists. Russaw also had three service aces.
On the defensive side,
Tymera Crudup (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) led all players with 25 digs. Foster and Stackhouse had ten apiece. Stackhouse also led the team with four blocks while Lewis added three.
The Lions also finished the match with a higher attack % (.075) than the Hawks (.065). The Hawks however held the advantage with 45 kills to LU's 32 and had 13 aces to Lincoln's six.
Milica Vejnovic led the Hawks with 17 kills while Courtney O'Keefe added 12. Micayla Pope recorded 41 assists setting the offense for Chowan. Pope and O'Keefe also had four aces apiece. Meghan Mutter led the Hawks with 20 digs.
The women's volleyball team returns to action on Monday, October 29, 2018 when they travel to Lakewood, New Jersey to take on Georgian Court University. Tip off is at 6:00 p.m.
