Second Half Rally Spurs Lions in Win over Broncos

The Lincoln University women's basketball team trailed Fayetteville State University for most of the game until late in the fourth quarter when they rallied from three points down to record their seventh win in their last eight games with a 64-60 win over the Broncos Friday afternoon at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Lions improve to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association contests.  The Broncos fall to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) had a game high 18 points to lead the Lions, eight of those coming in the decisive fourth quarter.  Shecquan Bailey (Salisbury, Md./Snow Hill (Baltimore City C.C.)) added 11 points, including three critical free throws in the final minute of play to help seal the win.  Michelle Fitzgerald (Baltimore, Md./Md. Academy of Tech & Health Science (N.C. A & T)) also scored 11 points while Shahra Madison (Chesapeke, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School (Chesapeke College)) was a perfect 5-5 from the field, scoring ten points while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.

Jamesha Mosley paced the Broncos with 14 points while Breona Jones added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Lincoln trailed by as many as 11 points in the second quarter before closing the gap to seven by halftime, 34-27.  The Lions opened the third quarter with an 11-3 flourish to take their first lead of the game 38-37 just 3:37 into the period.  The two teams exchanged the lead three times over the course of the quarter with the Broncos leading by two at quarter's end 44-42.

Pendleton's three-pointer early in the fourth quarter tied the game at 48-48.  Michelle Gainey put the Broncos back up by three a minute later with a layup and both teams exchanged baskets until Mosley's layup with 4:23 left again put the Broncos up by three 58-55. The Lions then rattled off seven straight points to take their biggest lead of the game at 62-58 with 35 seconds left.  Pendleton started the run with a pair of free throws with buckets from Bailey and Fitzgerald following.  Bailey then sank the first of two free throws to make it a two-possession game at 62-58 with 35 seconds remaining.  FSU's Yakima Clifton cut the margin to two with a layup with 26 ticks on the clock before Bailey sank two free throws to provide the Lions with the final four-point margin of victory.

Lincoln shot 66.7% (6-9) from the field in the decisive fourth quarter and made nine of their team total of 20 free throws in the final ten minutes of action.  For the game however, the Broncos outshot the Lions 44.8% (26-58) to 38.8% (19-49). The Lions made 20 of 29 free throws, holding a decisive advantage on the Broncos who made just five the entire game.  Lincoln had a narrow rebounding edge 35-32 and committed one fewer turnover. The Lions return to action on Saturday with a home CIAA crossover match with St. Augustine's University.  The match begins at 2:00 p.m.  Admission is free.
