Bulldogs Complete Season Sweep of Lions

The Lincoln University women's basketball team placed four players in double figures but fell to visiting Bowie State University 65-54 Saturday afternoon at Manuel Rivero Hall.
 
The Lions fall to 6-16 overall and 3-9 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games.  Bowie State improves to 17-5 overall and 9-3 in league play.and completes the regular season sweep of Lincoln with the win, having earned a 53-45 win on their home court earlier this season.
 
Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) led Lincoln with 14 points while a trio of Lincoln players, She'cquan Bailey (Denton, Md/Baltimore City CC), De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) and Jaeda Davis (Milwaukee, Wis./ Rufus King HS) added 11 points apiece.  Monique Cheek (Teaneck, NJ/Harford Community College)   led all players with nine rebounds while also dishing out a team high three assists.  Taylor added three blocks.
 
Denver Clyde scored 26 points (10-12 FG, 3-3 3FG, 3-3 FT) to lead the Bulldogs while Kyah Proctor and Pere Alexander added ten points apiece.  Clyde and Kyaja Williams paced BSU with seven rebounds apiece.
 
It was a dominant second quarter by the Bulldogs that proved to be the Lions undoing as BSU took advantage of six LU turnovers in the period, outscoring the Lions by eight and taking a 31-22 lead at the halftime.  The two teams had played a close first ten minutes with the Lions holding the lead for the majority of the period with the biggest bulge coming midway through the opening quarter on a Cheek layup  making the score 9-4.  The Bulldogs closed the period with an 8-2 flourish and outscored Lincoln 10-4 to open the second period.
 
The Lions cut the Bulldogs' lead to five in the opening minutes of the third period, scoring six of the first eight points and making the score 33-28.  Another 8-2 run by BSU pushed the lead to double digits for the first time at 40-31 with 1:37 left before Davis connected on three of four free throws to cut the lead back to eight 41-33 entering the final quarter.
 
Lincoln shaved just one point off the lead in the first two minutes of the final period before a 12-4 uprising by the Bulldogs pushed their lead to its peak at 55-40 with 3:26.  A pair of free throws from Davis and a 3-ball from Bailey cut the margin back down to ten, but time was not on the Lions side despite holding BSU to just one field over the final three minutes of action.  The Bulldogs connected on eight of ten shots from the free throw line over the final 1":57 to seal the 11-point win.
 
The Bulldogs had the better shooting percentage in the contest, 43.1% (22-51) to 36% (18-50) with the Lions just slightly better from long range (3-9 to BSU's 4-14). The two teams had 36 rebounds apiece and the Bulldogs committed six fewer turnovers (11-17).
 
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 when they travel to face Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina.  Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.in what will Lincoln's final regular season road contest.
