Chowan Cruises to Win over Lincoln

The Chowan University women's basketball team  shot 60% from three-point range (9-15) in the first half as they opened up a 52-25 lead at halftime and made it stood as they defeated  Lincoln University 82-64 Wednesday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Lions fall to 7-18 overall and 4-11 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games.  The Hawks improve to 16-9 overall and 9-6 in league play.

She'cquan Bailey (Denton, Md/Baltimore City CC) led all scorers with 17 points (6-9 FG, 3-5 3FG, 2-2 FT).  Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) added 16 points and a team high eight rebounds.  McKenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) dished out a team-high four assists.

Chantel Roberts led the Hawks with 16 points while Danielle Weldon added 11.  Jordan Payne led all players with 16 rebounds and Mariah Coker dished out a game high six assists.

Chowan led the game wire-to-wire, scoring the first eight points of the game while building an 11 point lead after one quarter and expanding it with a 28-12 second quarter effort to lead by 27, 52-25 at the break.    Twenty-seven of the Hawks 52 points came from beyond the arc as they shot 60%, making nine of 15 from long range and 44.8% for the half.   Lincoln struggled with their shooting , making just six field goals in 23 shots over the first 20 minutes (26%)

The Hawks led by 29 at the 6:24 mark of the third quarter when the Lions started to try and make the game respectable, embarking on a 15-2 run to close the gap to 16, 60-44 as the quarter was winding down.    Spencer and Bailey started the run with consecutive 3-balls and Pendleton followed with a traditional three-point play and make the score 58-38 via nine unanswered points.  After a Roberts layup, Bailey and Pendleton sank back-to-back jumpers and Pendleton added a pair of free throws to complete the run.    The Hawks scored in the final seconds of the quarter to lead 62-44 heading into the final period.

An 8-2 run by the Hawks to start the fourth quarter pushed the lead back to 24 and the lead oscillated between 21 and 25 points for much of the period.  The Lions trailed by 25 with 3:44 left when an 8-0 run pulled the squad within 17 but that would be as close as they came as the Hawks pushed the lead back above 20 points before settling in for the 18 point victory.

The Lions will play their final regular season game on Saturday when the host Virginia State University at Manuel Rivero Hall.  Tipoff time is set for 2:00 p.m.
