Senior outside hitter Mariah russell recorded her third double-double of the season and became the Lions all-time kills leader as the Lincoln university women's volleyball team fell to Livingstone college 3-1 in the final match at the CIAA Volleyball Roundup hosted by the Lions at Manuel Rivero Hall on Sunday.
The Lions fall to 2-10 overall and 0-9 in CIAA games. Livingstone improves to 3-5 overall and 3-5 in league play. The Blue Bears won the first two sets 25-19 and 28-26 while the Lions captured the third set 25-23. Livingstone closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set.
Russell entered the matched needing six kills to surpass Donneisha Smith's career total of 486 set back in her senior year of 2008.  Russell got the Lions first point from a kill in the opening set and added four more before the set ended tying Smith's mark. Russell surpassed the mark with her first kill in the second set, giving the Lion's an 11-9 lead at the time. She finished the match with 16 total kills to have 496 for her career. On defense Russell also recorded 16 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Aubury Coleman (Mason City, Iowa/ Mason City) was the only other Lions player to reach double figures for kills, equaling Russell's total of 16.Â
Alisa Foster (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Acad.) had 39 assists. On the defensive side
Tymera Crudup (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) and
Amaya Booze (Windsor Mill, Md./Franklin) joined Russell with double figure dig efforts with 15 and 10 digs respectively.Â
Tierra Russaw (Westland, Mich./Summit Academy) and Coleman had two blocks apiece.
Ajia Long led Livingstone with 17 kills while Jekisha Rhymes and Shantell Billups had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Rhymes and Billups both recorded double-doubles with 14 digs apiece on the defensive end while Kierra Acuff added ten digs. Rhymes also had three blocks.
The Lions are back in action on Thursday, October 5, 2017 when they host Bowie State University. Tipoff is 6:00 p.m. at Manuel Rivero Hall.
