Nandi Taylor drove the lane for a layup with 1.5 seconds remaining to lift the Virginia State University women's basketball team to a 53-52 come-from-behind win over visiting Lincoln University Saturday afternoon in Ettrick, Virginia.
The Lions drop to 5-15 overall and 3-8 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games. The Trojans improve 14-6 overall and 6-4 in league play.
She'cquan Bailey (Denton, Md/Baltimore City CC) led the Lions with 14 points and four assists.Â
Monique Cheek (Teaneck, NJ/Harford Community College) added 12 points (6-10 FG) and six rebounds.Â
Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) chipped in eight points and grabbed a team high eight rebounds.Â
De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) added seven rebounds.
Endia McKinney led VSU with 15 points while Mia fits chipped in 14. Taylor Daniels grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and scored nine points. Domonique Hagins dished out a game-high six assists.
Lincoln used a 17-3 run to close out the second quarter and take a 32-19 lead at the half. Mc
Kenzie Spencer's (Richmond, Va./Henrico) three-point goal from NBA range triggered the run which saw the Lions hold the Trojans without a field goal for the final 5:39 of the quarter.
McKinney's three-pointer in third quarter started a huge comeback for the Trojans who outscored the Lions 23-9 in the period to hold a 42-41 lead at the end of three quarters. The Lions managed just one field goal in the quarter while shooting 7-12 from the free throw line in the period.
The lead changed hands four times in the first five minutes of the final quarter.Â
De'jah Taylor's (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) two free throws at the 5:03 mark gave the Lions a two point lead and two more at the charity stripe from Bailey put Lincoln up by four 50-46 with 2:42 left.  VSU stormed back scoring two points on a pair of free throws and another two off a LU turnover to tie the game at 50-50. Tierra Richburg put VSU on top, 51-50 with a free throw at the 1:20 mark and after forcing a shot clock violation, LU's Taylor gave the Lions a 52-51 lead with 7.1 seconds left, setting up the final play which saw VSU's Taylor score the winning bucket and get fouled with 1.5 seconds left. She missed the free throw but there was not enough time to get a decent shot off towards the basket as VSU hung on.
After shooting 50% in the first half, the Lions struggled in the last two quarters shooting just 3-20 (15%) to finish the game shooting 34.8% (16-48).  Lincoln was 4-12 (33.3%) from three point range and 16-29 (55.2%) from the free throw line. The Lions outrebounded the Trojans 41-38 but also committed six more turnovers than the Trojans (13-19). VSU finished the game shooting 30% (18-60) from the field after shooting just 8-34 (23.5%) in the first half.
Lincoln will return to action on Monday, Jan 30, 2017 when they travel up the road to face area rival Cheyney University in the "Battle of the First". Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
