Lions Earn Decisive Win over Lady Falcons

The Lincoln University women's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a decisive 55-29 win over St. Augustine's University Wednesday afternoon in Raleigh, North Carolina.
 
The Lions improve to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  The Lady Falcons drop to 3-15 overall and 0-5 in league play.
 
Amanda Okodugha (Norrköping, Sweden/Young Harris College) led the Lions with 12 points (5-7 FG, 2-2 FT).  Monique Cheek (Teaneck, NJ/Harford Community College) added ten points (5-9 FG).  She'cquan Bailey (Denton, Md/Baltimore City CC) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her eight points and a team high four assists.  Nine different players scored for the Lions.

Quiera Gilmore led the Lady Falcons with nine points.  Shakeisha Washington had seven rebounds.

The Lions took control early, leading for all but 25 seconds in the first quarter.  Cheek scored the first four points of the game and the Lady Falcons followed with the next six.  Cheek and Okodugha added back-to-back baskets starting an 11-2 run by the Lions to close out the quarter, leading 15-8.

Poor shooting by both teams in the second quarter (5-27 combined) led to just 15 points scored between both teams and a 23-15 Lions lead at the half.
Washington sank a three-point field goal to open the third quarter, cutting the Lions lead to five e then went to work, holding their hosts without a field goal until the 1:51 mark, while taking control with a 16-1 uprising.   Okodugha's layup started the run, followed by a three-ball from Bailey.  Gilmore sank a free throw for the only SAU points in the run before Jaeda Davis (Milwaukee, Wis./ Rufus King HS) drove for a layup and Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) followed with a layup –plus-one.  McKenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) completed the run with a pair of free throws.

The Lions maintained an advantage of 20 or more points for the entire fourth quarter, eventually taking their biggest lead at 28 points, at 55-27 with 1:48 remaining, thanks to an 8-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws from De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional).

Lincoln grabbed a season high 50 rebounds in the contest, including 22 off the offensive glass, finishing with a 50-28 advantage on the boards.  Neither team shot particularly well from the field and the free throw line with the Lions having slight advantages in both.  Lincoln shot 32.8% (20-61) from the field and made 12 of 19 free throws (63.2%).  The Lions held the Lady Falcons to just ten total field goals (no more than three in any quarter) and a 21.3% shooting effort. (10-47). The Lions committed four fewer turnovers and had the better assist turnover ratio (9/16 to SAU's 4/20).

The Lions return to action on Saturday when they travel to play north division rival Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland.  Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
