A fourth quarter rally by the Lincoln university women's basketball team fell short as the Lions dropped their third consecutive game, losing to the University of the District of Columbia 65-63 Tuesday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
Lincoln's record drops to 1-4 overall while UDC earned their first win of the season and also sports a 1-4 record.
Kholby Oliver (Bowie, Md./Tallahassee Community College) led four players in double figures for the Lions coming off the bench to score 15 points (5-10 FG, 4-9 3FG).
Brianna Logan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley (Siena)) added 14 points while
Diamond Mickle (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul VI (Va.) (Harford C.C.)) and
Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) had 10 points apiece. Mickle also record a double-double grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Pendleton dished out a team-high four assists.
NyAsia Anderson led the Firebirds with 20 points. Dayjah Anderson added 13 points while Shantrel Oliver chipped in 11.
The Lions trailed by as many as 17 points late in the third quarter before starting their comeback. A 10-2 run to in the final 2:55 of the third period brought the 17 point deficit down to single digits, entering the final quarter. LU's Oliver sank three three-pointers in the opening four minutes of the fourth and final period as the Lions continued to surge, using a 10-4 spurt from the start of the quarter to pull within three 59-53 with 5:33 remaining.
Anderson put the Firebirds back up by six with a triple at the 3:42 mark and added a free throw at the 2:09 mark to go up by seven. Pendleton added three more free throws on the Lions next two possessions to pull LU within four 63-59 with 1:02 left. The firebirds got a pair of free throws from Anderson before Mc
Kenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) connected from long range to close the gap to 65-62.
Jaeda Davis (Milwaukee, Wis./ Rufus King HS) added a free throw with 14 seconds left to close within two. After Shantrel Oliver missed both free throws on the other end, Lincoln had one last chance but Spencer's shot missed the mark and the Firebirds held on for the win.
Lincoln had led throughout the first quarter, scoring the first eight points of the game to set the pace, but the UDC clawed their way back cutting the Lady Lion lead to two by the end of the period before taking their first lead on their first possession in the second quarter (an Anderson triple). Davis gave the Lions the lead back at 29-27 with 2:20 left in the half before the Firebirds closed out the quarter with a 10-2 run to lead 37-31 at the break.
UDC outscored Lincoln 16-5 in the first 7:05 of the third to take a 53-36 lead before the Lions began the comeback that would eventually fall short.
The Firebirds shot 40% (22-55) from the field for the game, including an 11-22 effort (505) from three point range. The Lions connected on 31.1% of their shots (23-74) from the field and were 8-28 (28.6%) from three point range. Lincoln had a slight edge on the glass (46-43) and committed seven fewer turnovers (12-19) while recording a 13/12 assist/turnover ratio.
Lincoln is back in action on Monday, November 28, 2016 when they host the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown at Manuel Rivero Hall. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
