LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lady Lions suffered a heart breaking loss in overtime, 4-3 to St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, Sept. 12
th at LU Stadium.
Lincoln's
Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute) scored the first goal of the game off an assist from freshman
Cleo Spear (Sydney, Australia/Oxford Falls Grammar School) in the 15
th minute. Harris now has four goals in three games played for the Lady Lions. Lincoln held the lead until 17
th minute of action when the Spartans tied the match at 1-1. After the equalizer, St. Thomas Aquinas took a 2-1 lead in the 21
st minute capitalizing on some aggressive ball play. The Lady Lions found themselves defending the Spartans strikers but still managed to hold a slight advantage in first half shots attempts (8-7).
Moments before halftime Lincoln was awarded a free kick and senior
Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS) nailed it from 30-yards out tying the match at 2-2.
In the second half Lincoln goal keeper
Kaylee Dennis (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run HS) recorded six saves after facing 14 attempts. Lincoln played defense for majority of the half in an attempt to slow down the Spartans attack. In the 62
nd minute the Spartans took a 3-2 lead on an unassisted goal by Priya Bhatti. In the rainy weather both teams battled as the intensity grew heading into the final twenty minutes.
The Lady Lions were on the attack when freshman
Kayla Butts (Lansdowne, PA/Bonner Prendie Catholic HS) scored her first goal of the season on a header past the St. Thomas Aquinas defender. The match went into overtime tied at 3-3. But in overtime the Spartans fired two shots in five minutes of action to pull past the Lady Lions. St. Thomas netted the game winner in the 95
th minute of action just as the weather was clearing up. Lincoln fought but came up short in overtime and drops to 0-4 overall.
Lincoln will host their third consecutive home game on Wednesday, September 16
th against Georgian Court University at 4 p.m.
