LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Senior
Courtney Lucas (Washington, DC/Friendship Collegiate Academy) hit the game-winning layup with eight seconds left lifting the Lady Lions to a school record 19
th win in a 46-45 victory at home on Wednesday, February 18
th in Manuel Rivero Hall.
Lincoln and Chowan shot a low percentage from the field in a Northern Division battle between the first and third ranked teams. The Lady Lions loss earlier in the season to Chowan on the road 62-55 and were looking for revenge at home.
Freshman
Vivevca Nwagbaraocha (Milwaukee, WI/Pius XI HS)'s three-pointer from beyond half court at the end of the first half, tied the contest at 23-23 between the Lady Lions and Hawks. Lincoln played aggressively on the defensive end of the court forcing 11 turnovers and holding Chowan to 37 percent (11-of-29) shooting from the field. Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) had five first half points while freshman
Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) and junior
Mieana Gaines (Lincoln Park, MI/Southfield University Academy) both had four points. Smith had three steals and senior
Zephrah Pam (Syracuse, NY/Monroe CC) controlled the paint with five rebounds.
Lincoln opened up a small lead by the midway point in the second half against the Hawks. The LU advantage increased to eight (44-36) after sophomore
De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional)'s layup rolled in with four minutes left. From that moment until the final seconds of action Chowan held Lincoln scoreless and surprisingly took a 45-44 lead with 22 seconds remaining. Chowan's Rachel Gostomski grabbed the offensive rebound and scored the go-ahead basket for the Hawks.
The Lady Lions called a timeout to setup a final play to avenge their earlier loss to the Hawks on the road. LU's

Lucas' layup put the Lady Lions ahead 46-45. Chowan's final chance fell short after a couple of shots missed the goal and Lincoln held on for the victory over Chowan. The Lady Lions made history improving to a 19-6 overall record marking the most wins by a women's basketball team at The Lincoln University.
Teria Pendleton scored a game-high eight points while
Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) had seven points. Junior
Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) and
Mieana Gaines (Lincoln Park, MI/Southfield University Academy) both scored six points. The Hawks were led by Dhyamond Crenshaw's eight points as they dropped to 12-12 overall and 8-6 (4-4) in the CIAA.
Lincoln will honor three seniors on Senior Day in their final home game of the season on Saturday, February 21
st at 3p.m. against Virginia State University.
