Brion Robinson (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook HS), but three fourth quarter touchdowns sealed a Fayetteville State 49-17 CIAA victory on Saturday, October 3
rd.
Fayetteville State scored two first quarter touchdowns and then ran for an 84-yard rushing touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead against Lincoln. LU kicker
Brett Arkelian (Clovis, CA) converted on a 20-yard made field goal in the second quarter to cut the FSU advantage to 21-3. Arkelian's field goal was his fifth of the season and came with 7:24 left in the first half. The Lions defensive woes continued with a Broncos' fourth touchdown of the half with 4:16 left to play.
LU running back
Stephen Scott (Baltimore, MD/Bethel College) collected 72 first half rushing yards. Lincoln's offense only had 88 total yards while their defense gave up 250 total yards. Defensive back
Brion Robinson (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook HS) recorded his third interception of the season in the second quarter. His forced turnover setup the made field goal attempt by the Lions.
The third quarter was the Lions most effective period in their CIAA road opener. Lincoln finally kept Fayetteville State out of the end zone and changed the momentum by adding on 14 points. Going back to their rushing attack LU scored their first touchdown on a one-yard rush by
Stephen Scott (Baltimore, MD/Bethel College). Lincoln went 69 yards on nine plays to cut the FSU lead to 28-10. Running back
Mustafa Mahmud (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area HS) had two rushes on that drive collecting 22 yards and Scott tallied 31 yards. On the ensuing drive by the Broncos the Lions defense forced their second turnover of the game.
Defensive back
Kevin Norris (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown HS) intercepted FSU's quarterback at their 20-yard line and went untouched for a touchdown. Arkelian's extra-point-attempt was successful and the Lions trailed 28-17 with 6:21 remaining. Lincoln improved in the third quarter with 104 offensive yards compared to only 36 by the Broncos. Despite their third quarter struggles Fayetteville State responded with three heartbreaking fourth quarter touchdowns to down the Lions.
FSU converted on a 78-yard passing touchdown, then on a 44-yard passing touchdown, and a six yard rush extending their advantage to 49-17 with 2:08 left to play. Lincoln drops to 1-1 in CIAA play after losing to Fayetteville State on the road, 49-17.
Stephen Scott (Baltimore, MD/Bethel College) rushed for 100 yards or more for the fourth time this season. He finished with 184 rushing yards on 41 carries and one touchdown. He averaged 4.5 rushing yards per carry and had a long of 23 yards.
