Chowan Edges Lady Lions In Overtime, 62-55

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Senior Zephrah Pam (Syracuse, NY/Monroe CC) scored 17 points in an overtime road loss to Chowan University, 62-55, on Wednesday, January28th at the Helm Center. The Lady Lions struggled in the second half and overtime as the Hawks built momentum and outscored Lincoln 11-4 in the extra session.

Zephrah Pam (Syracuse, NY/Monroe CC) scored in double figures for the Lady Lions recording 17 points and six rebounds off of the bench. Pam made 9-of-12 free-throws leading Lincoln on the road in her 11th double-digit scoring performance of the season. Junior Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) tied a career-high with six steals while scoring eight points. Lincoln falls to 14-5 overall and 6-3 in the CIAA conference.

The Lady Lions held a double digit advantage throughout the first 14 minutes of action. Junior Mieana Gaines (Lincoln Park, MI/Southfield University Academy) and Zephrah Pam (Syracuse, NY/Monroe CC) each scored eight first half points as Lincoln dominated the paint (24-10). Chowan trailed (23-12) at the 6:13 mark and then quickly turned thing around with a 10-3 run closing out the first half and trimming the LU lead to 26-22. Lincoln's defense held Chowan to 26 percent (7-of-26) shooting from the field including 14 percent (1-of-7) from three-point range. Despite 17 first half turnovers for the Lady Lions their offense made 12-of-21 (57 percent) shots from the field and outrebounded Chowan 18-13.

Junior Lisa Saunders (Hampton, VA/Hampton HS) and Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) hit back-to-back three-pointers in the second half putting the Lady Lions ahead of the Hawks, 32-26. Chowan increased their defense pressure in the next 12 minutes of action to rally from behind and take a 40-38 lead at the 8:03 mark. The Hawks held the Lady Lions to six made second half field goals and improved down the stretch knocking down crucial shots at home. Zephrah Pam (Syracuse, NY/Monroe CC) was the only source of LU offense with 7-of-9 made free-throws in the half leading to nine points. Pam's free-throws with 2:03 remaining tied the game for the sixth time at 48-48.

Chowan turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) drew a foul with 1:40 left on the clock. Clark made one of her attempts as LU led 49-48. The Hawks came up short on their next two attempts at the basket as LU senior Courtney Lucas (Washington, DC/Friendship Collegiate Academy) was fouled with 54 seconds and sent to the charity stripe. Lucas made a pair of free-throws increasing the Lady Lions lead to 51-48. Chowan's Alisha Mobley's three-pointer sent the game into overtime with 47 seconds left to play and the game tied at 51-51. Lincoln final attempts were a pair of three-pointers in the closing seconds of regulation, but both failed and the game was sent into overtime.

In the extra session, Chowan outscored Lincoln 11-4 and went on to win 62-55. The Lady Lions struggled only making 1-of-10 attempts from the field and lost several starters due to foul trouble in their first overtime action of the season. The Lady Lions travel to Ettrick, VA on Saturday, January 31st to take on Virginia State University at 3:00 p.m.
