Lady Lions Make History Defeating Shaw, 62-59

Senior Cynthia Johnson scored a team-high 14 points against Shaw.
Box Score Lincoln University, PA – Four Lady Lions netted double-figures in the program's first ever win over the Lady Bears of Shaw University, 62-59 on Monday, January 13 in Manuel Rivero Hall. Lincoln forced 20 Lady Bear turnovers and made five three-pointers in their victory.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a 9-2 lead within the first six minutes of the game. Shaw was able to shorten the deficit a few times, but never took the lead.

Lincoln went into halftime with a 26-22 advantage and held Shaw to just 27 percent shooting from the field in the opening period.

The Lady Lions expanded their lead to 10 midway through the second half, making the score 44-34 with more than 10 minutes left in the game.

Shaw battled back over the next five minutes and put together a 14-6 run to pull within two points.

Thanks to a layup and a jumper from freshman forward De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional), Lincoln was able to push their lead back up to six. That would be their highest lead for the rest of the game, however.

The next five points of the game were scored by Shaw and the game was tied up with 2:16 to go in regulation.

Back-to-back field goals by sophomore guard Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) and Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) in a 20-second stretch allowed Lincoln to regain a four-point lead.

The two teams traded baskets over the next few moments as the Lady Lions maintained a four-point advantage. Shaw converted another field goal to trim their deficit to two points with 45 seconds left.

Forty seconds later, De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) committed a foul shortly after she missed a three pointer on the other end. Shaw proceeded to split the pair of free throws and Lincoln received possession after the second was missed.

Sophomore guard Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) was sent to the free-throw line where she knocked down both with three seconds left to give the Lady Lions a three point lead.

Shaw then called a timeout and proceeded to move the ball down the court. Johnson got her hands on a pass and deflected the ball out of bounds about a foot in front of half-court with .5 seconds left. Shaw inbounded and quickly hoisted up a three-pointer that came up short, and sealed Lincoln's first ever win over Shaw University.

Once again, the Lady Lions produced a superior second half. In that period they shot 45 percent from the field, scored 26 points in the paint to Shaw's 16, and scored 12 fast-break points. They never trailed in the second half.

Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) added four rebounds and four assists to go along with her 14 points. She also shot over 54 percent from the field.

Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) once again had an impressive all-around performance, putting up a stat line of 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) and Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) also scored in double figures, putting up 11 points each.

Junior forward Courtney Lucas (Washington, DC/Friendship Collegiate Academy) chipped in 10 rebounds and six assists.
