Soccer Nets Three Goals in Ten Minutes Defeating Salem International, 3-0

Box Score
Lincoln University, PA- Lincoln scored three golden goals in a ten minute span to defeat Salem International, 3-0 on September 25th.

In a spate of 10 minutes, The Lincoln University women's soccer team changed their destiny. In an evenly contested game between Lincoln and Salem International that seemed like goals would be hard to come by, Lincoln used ten golden minutes to change the script. The Lions scored three unanswered goals in the 71st, 80th and 81st minutes. Coach Boateng philosophized, "We played the way I wanted us to play, building attacks with patience. Our defenders did extremely well to initiate our forays. This was total soccer."

Lincoln had the lion's share of possession in the first half but could not penetrate the defense of Salem International. But anytime Salem threatened, they looked scary with 2 breakaways. Lincoln's Chloe Grice (Lancashire, UK/Runshaw HS) saved two breakaway goals by the Tigers. The Lady Lions had its fair share of the chances to take the lead but failed to utilize those moments. With both teams squandering glorious opportunities, the referee blew his whistle to end the first half.

The rhythm of the game increased some more in the second half with both teams in search of goals. With end to end stuff and midfield battle between Haley Hendricks (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and Alexandria McIntosh, the stage was set for uncompromising encounter. Lincoln continued to swing passes together in an attempt to unlock the water-tight defense of Salem International.

The breakthrough finally came in the 71st minute.  It started with a nice build up from the back of Lincoln. Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS) fed the ball to Alanna Van Ness (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) in the center circle. She shrugged off two defenders and then took three extra touches before splitting the defense of Salem with an intelligent pass. Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute) benefitted from the pass and slid the ball past Salem's goalie to break the deadlock. That was the beginning of good things to come Lincoln's way.

Nine minutes later, the insurance goal arrived. Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) picked the ball deep from midfield. O'Brien spotted Harris making a diagonal run and laid the ball in her path. Harris' effort went off the body of the goalie but wasn't enough to stop the ball from slowly rolling over the goal line for the second goal.

The killer punch came in the 81st minute when Harris returned the favor to O'Brien. Courtney Moss (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) long ball found Haley Hendricks (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) in a wide area. She sent in an in-swinger to Harris who was challenged. Harris gently tapped the ball to O'Brien to finish.

Lincoln outshot Salem 15-8. Salem's all 8 shots were on goal but Grice was always there to weather the storm.

Lincoln will make a short trip to Goldey-Beacom College on Thursday October 3rd for a 4pm start time.
