Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) led three players in double figures as the Lady Lions got back into the win column with a 64-55 victory over Livingstone on Monday night in a CIAA contest at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
“Getting out as quickly as we did helped us get on a roll,” Lincoln head coach
Jessica Kern said. “The goal is to be at no less than 80 percent free-throw shooting for the game.”
Johnson scored 20 points and dished out five assists to pace Lincoln (6-7 overall, 2-1 CIAA).
Tahlar McIntosh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Alvernia HS) scored 13 of her 17 points from the free-throw line and also pulled down eight rebounds.
Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) chipped in with 10 points as the Lady Lions shot 40 percent (19-of-47) from the field and 63 percent (25-of-40) from the charity stripe.
Lincoln opened the game on a 9-0 run, capped by a Johnson bucket with 17:10 remaining in the first half, but Livingstone rallied and closed the gap to 10-7 after a free throw by Jasmine Murray with 11:50 left.
The Lady Lions led 12-9 with 8:42 remaining before closing out the first half on a 14-10 run to take a 26-19 advantage into the break.
Lincoln led by as many as 15 points four times in the second half, but each time, the Lady Blue Bears rallied.
Livingstone trimmed the deficit to 49-45 with 6:36 remaining on a 3-pointer by Ashley Walker, but Lincoln answered with a 8-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 57-47 advantage after a McIntosh putback with 3:33 left.
The Lady Blue Bears (5-7, 1-2) cut the margin to 59-55 after a Walker putback with 1:26 remaining, but Livingstone couldn't get any closer.
Walker paced the Lady Blue Bears with 12 points and six boards. Kelcyn Manurs added 11 points, while Jasmine Murray finished with 10 points as Livingstone was 19-of-70 from the floor for 27 percent.
Lincoln takes to the road for its next four CIAA contests as the Lady Lions travel 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10 to Fayetteville State.
