LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.
Tim Green (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) recorded 13 tackles and had three sacks, but it wasn't enough to slow down Kentucky State as the Lincoln University football team dropped a 35-23 decision on Saturday at Lincoln University Stadium.

Tim Green (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) played an All-American game,” Lincoln head coach O.J. Abanishe said. “He showed why he is an All-American.”

The Lions (0-3) struck first as Kyle Jaski (Escondido, Calif./Kenwood HS) booted a 28-yard field with 7:51 remaining in the opening quarter to give Lincoln a 3-0 lead.

After a Kentucky State score by Justin Williams, Charles Green (Coatesville, Pa./), who started in replace of Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) at quarterback, scored on a 1-yard keeper to give the Lions a 9-6 advantage with 10:52 left in the first half.

Matt Coston's 5-yard touchdown reception from Charles Green (Coatesville, Pa./) extended the Lincoln lead to 16-6 as the extra point was blocked and returned for the two-point conversion by Grandson Brown IV with 7:37 remaining in the second quarter.

“That play was the turning point in the game,” Abanishe said.

However, the Thorobreds (1-1) got a pair of touchdowns by Justin Williams to grab a 22-16 advantage right before the half.

Kentucky State, which amassed 342 total yards of offense, added a pair of scores – an Aris Allen 2-yard run and Clayton Patton II 22 yard touchdown reception from James Martez – to extend the lead to 35-16 with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter.

The Lions, which had 199 total yards of offense, tried to rally late as Gerald Swain (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township HS) scored on a 4-yard run with 12:42 left in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 35-23.

After the two teams exchanged turnovers, Kentucky State used the ground game to cut nine minutes off the clock, leaving the Lions with one final chance to mount a comeback in the final 2:45.

Lincoln was unable to move the football and turned the ball over on downs as Kentucky State ran out the clock.

Charles Green (Coatesville, Pa./) was 12-of-28 passing for 113 yards and connected with Coston four times. Coston finished with 50 yards and one score. Swain paced the ground game with 56 yards on 12 rushes.

“The offensive line did fantastic,” Swain said. “As a group, we came together.”

Defensively, Tim Green (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) finished with a game-high 13 total tackles, including nine solo stops. He also had seven tackles for a loss of 56 yards and three quarterback hurries. Carl Richardson (Daytona Beach, FL/Atlantic HS) added nine tackles and forced one fumble.

“My coaches put me in a good position to make plays and I took advantage of it,” Tim Green (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) said.

Lincoln opens up CIAA play 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22 in Salisbury, N.C., as the Lions take on Livingstone College.
