Lady Lions surge past Lady Vikings

Box Score LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Behind a second-half surge, the Lincoln University women's basketball team won its second straight CIAA Northern Division contest as the Lady Lions rallied for a 55-48 over Elizabeth City State on Tuesday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
 
“I just read the stat line to the girls and it wasn't pretty, but their learning the meaning of effort,” Lincoln head coach Jessica Kern said. “On paper, we should not have won that basketball game. Winning is a mentality and I think we're just getting there.”
 
Denyse Moore (Hampton, Va./Woodside HS) and Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) each poured in 13 points to pace Lincoln (7-17 overall, 3-9 CIAA, 3-3 CIAA Northern). Moore also added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals as the Lady Lions were 15-of-48 shooting for 31 percent, but won the game at the foul line by going 21-of-35.
 
Lincoln fell behind by as many as nine points, 25-16, in the first half, but battled back and closed the gap to 27-22 at the half.
 
The Lady Lions trailed by five, 31-26, just five minutes into the second half, but used a 14-2 run, capped by a Krystal Fluellen (New York, N.Y./Richard Green HS) putback to give Lincoln a 40-33 lead with 8:51 left. The Lady Vikings tied the game at 40 on a Jasmine Whitehurst bucket with 6:27 remaining.
 
However, Lincoln never relinquished the lead as Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) gave the Lady Lions a 49-45 advnatage with 1:04 remaining on a free throw and Elizabeth City State couldn't recover from the deficit.
 
Stephanie Harper led Elizabeth City State (12-10, 6-6, 3-3) with 13 points and a game-high 14 boards. Whitehurst added 11 points as the Lady Vikings were 20-of-55 shooting for 36 percent, but were just 6-of-16 at the foul line.
