EMPORIA, Va. (April 16, 2011) — Sophomore catcher Mariah Liberty (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union HS) powered her way to the team's batting crown with a 4-for-8 day at the plate on Saturday finishing with a season .393 average.
She also logged three doubles, giving her five in the last two days. However, the Lady Lions fell to Saint Paul's College in both games on the season's final day, 14-13 and 10-8.
Freshman shortstop Avree Morton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS), who held the highest average since the opening weekend, was 2-for-5 with a double. Sophomore Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) was 3-for-4 in game two with 3 RBIs including a two-run homer.
Both games were as tight as the final scores indicated. In the first game, LU trailed, 14-5, after four innings but was able to close it within 14-13 in the top of the seventh. Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS), a day removed from her second homer of the season, tripled to begin the frame and stole home. Sasha Evans (Hampton, VA/Phoebus) walked and stole second but got thrown out attempting to swipe third to end the game.
In the second contest, DuBose began the game with a leadoff double and stole third. She came home on a ground-out by Evans. Liberty then recorded her second double of the twin bill, starting a four-run first inning, which Jasmine Baxter (Washington, D.C./McKinnley Tech HS) capped with an RBI single.
The Lady Lions added two in the third to take a 6-4 lead, but the Lady Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. Rucker tied it with her two-run homer, but Saint Paul's pushed the deciding runs across in the sixth to take the sweep.
Lincoln finishes the season 5-19 (5-13 CIAA) while Saint Paul's improved to 7-24 (5-15 CIAA).
