Women's tennis secures first win, men show improvement

PETERSBURG, Va. (March 28, 2011) — The Lincoln women's tennis team scored another first this past weekend. 

All the women registered a win at the second Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Round-up held March 25-27 at Virginia State University.

They defeated Livingstone 9-0 on Saturday. Leslie Reid-Bey (Sickelerville, N.J./Winslow Township HS) and Stephanie Henry (Pleasantville, N.J./Pleasantville) won the first doubles match 8-2 and in first singles, Reid-Bey, a sophomore, cruised 6-3, 6-0.

"I felt more comfortable, didn't rush my strokes and gained more confidence."

Henry, a junior,
used her court awareness and consistent strokes to beat her opponent Gareessa Henry 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match

Umiquewa Rogers blanked Gabriel Dewberry 6-0, 6-0 in the third singles spot.

The freshmen team of Rogers and Shari Davis scored their first doubles win as well with an 8-1 smacking of the Lady Blue Bears. Davis won her fourth singles match, 6-4, 6-1. In fifth singles, Sherlina Holland (Baltimore, Md./Northwestern HS) cruised 6-1, 6-0.

In their other matches, the Lady Lions fell to Winston-Salem State and Johnson C. Smith, 9-0.

The men had several winners in a 5-4 loss to Johnson C. Smith on Sunday.  Adedotun Osho (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) and Mark Chikwem (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) registered victories in singles play with Osho winning a tight match in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6(5) while Chickwem persevered in a tight second set for a 6-2, 7-5 win. Alfayo Michira (Kisii, Kenya/Cardinal Otunga) and Darius Gregory (Hyattsville Md./Central HS) won LU's third doubles match 8-3 over the Golden Bulls.

The Lions lost both matches of its doubleheader to Winston-Salem State, 9-0.

Lincoln will return to VSU for third in CIAA Round-up next weeekend.
