Johnson qualifies for IC4A Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lincoln University men's indoor track & field team opened the season Saturday at the United States Naval Academy Invitational.

Top performance for the day goes to Junior Clinton Johnson (Chester, Pa./Chester HS).

Johnson placed fifth in the 400 in a time of 48.96. He is credited as the first Lincoln runner to qualify for the 2012 IC4A Championship meet on March 3, 2012 at Boston University.

Also finishing in the 400 was senior Tarem Cannonier (Whiteplains, N.Y./Woodlands HS), and the freshmen duo of Miles Green (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) and Abraham Noel (North Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS). Green crossed in 50.43, while Noel and Cannonier followed in 50.55 and 50.60.

Starting the day off in the 60m Dash was senior Kevin Morgan (Providence, R.I./Hope HS), junior Asaad Monroe (Wilmington, DE/Delcastle Technical HS) and freshman Kasey Gamble (Clinton, Md./Gwynn Park HS). Morgan and Monroe crossed the line in 7.18, and Gamble ran a 7.40. All three athletes just missed the finals.

Next on the track was the mile run. Competing in this event were juniors Wilson Bailey (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow HS) and Ronald Evans (Philadelphia, Pa./Cheltenham HS), and freshman Federico Ghelli (Rome, Italy/Liceo Mons. Tozzi). Crossing the line first for Lincoln was Bailey in a time of 4:50.69. He was followed by Ghelli in 4:57.88. Evans finished in 5:28.04.

In the 800, freshman Kyle Edwards (Bloomfield, CT/Bloomfield HS) stood alone for the Lions. The freshman finished in 21st place in 2:00.37.

The Lions stacked the 200 with four runners, including Assad Monroe, Gamble, Desmond Bowser (Washington, DC/Archbishop Carroll HS) and Devon Lee (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia HS). Monroe finished 19th in 23 seconds. Gamble, Bowser and Lee finished in 27th, 30th and 31st, respectively.

The last event on the track was the 4x400m Relays.

The “A” team comprised of Johnson, Green, Cannonier and Noel earned sixth place in 3:20.36, just missing the IC4A qualifying time by .46 hundreds of a second. The “B” team ran a time of 3:35.51 to earn 19th.

The Lions return to action Jan. 6, 2012 at the University of Delaware Invitational in Newark, Del.
