LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (January 6, 2011) — A furious surge proved too exhausting as the Lincoln University women's basketball team fell in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener to Saint Augustine's College, 87-64.
After trailing by 14 points, Lincoln (1-7, 0-1 CIAA) went on an 8-0 spurt due largely to quick transition baskets including three by sophomore combo guard Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers), who finished with a team-high 13 points.
The Lady Falcons (7-4, 1-0 CIAA) promptly called timeout and quickly regained composure coming out of the break. The six-point difference was the closest LU got. SAC went on a 26-10 run over the next 11 minutes to put the game away.
Saint Augustine's top two scorers did not disappoint. Allison Sikes and Keyona Bryant finished with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Both had a game-high 8 rebounds.
This was Waters' second straight stellar game. Tuesday against Washington Adventist, she scored a career-high 17 points in a 27-point victory over the Lady Shock.
Cynthia Johnson (Randallstown, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) emerged as her sidekick once more. With 13 points, she now has two-straight games in double digits. She also had three assists. Sasha Evans (Hampton, VA/Phoebus) led LU in that category with five while DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with 10 points.
Despite this kind of productivity, turnovers proved the downfall. The Lady Lions committed 33 on the night. Both teams combined for 60 in a sloppy game marred by giveaways and fouls. There were also 48 whistles with both teams each getting to the line 29 times. The Lady Falcons converted on 18 while the Lady Lions knocked down 15.
