LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — The spirited play behind lone senior Chanelle Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Wood) (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Wood) nearly led Lincoln to an upset of Saint Augustine's College.
She had 16 points behind 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point line and notched four assists, but the Lady Falcons (10-7) hung on for a 62-58 win Monday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
Harris got the Lady Lions within 59-57 after driving to the basket in transition and making the basket despite the desperation foul by Ariel Brown. She hit the resulting free-throw for the three-point play.
Harris' 16 points were a season high. LU was led in scoring by Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) with 20 points. Danielle Smallwood (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) picked up 13 points and six boards.
Defensively, freshman center Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H Flowers HS) (Sprindale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) collected 12 rebounds and held Keyona Bryant to 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting.
LeKeisha White scored 23 points for SAC and had 10 rebounds. Allison Sykes had 17 points and nine rebounds.
Lincoln (2-14) led through much of the first half as the teams exchanged the lead seven times and led by as much as five at 16-11 with 8:49 remaining in the first half. At the intermission LU led 30-28.
In the second half, the Lady Falcons took the lead at 40-39 midway through the period following a layup by Sykes. They would not trail again and would go up by as much as seven with 1:08 remaining before Harris and Dubose combined to trim the lead to two.
Lincoln plays at Virginia State on Thursday and Bowie State on Saturday with both games tipping at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Lincoln and rival Cheyney meet at the Liacouras Center at 3 p.m. The HBCU Classic can be heard live at BrandywineRadio.com.
