RICHMOND, Va. (February 14, 2009) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team had a tough second half en route to a 79-47 defeat to Virginia Union at Barco-Stevens Gym Saturday night. (BOXSCORE)
Freshman Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) led the Lady Lions with 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Sasha Evans (Hampton, VA/Phoebus) and senior Angelle Green (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) finished with eight points each for Lincoln, which made 4-of-25 shots after intermission. Freshman Alease Tabb (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College High School) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with her six points.
Trailing, 30-25 at intermission, Lincoln started the second half strong by pulling to 32-29 on an Evans layup with 18 minutes, 29 seconds remaining. Lincoln trailed by four points twice: 34-30 with 15:58 left on a Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) foul shot & 36-32 with 14:25 remaining following a Cook lay-up.
Unfortunately for Lincoln, the basket closed. The Lady Lions went nine minutes with a basket. During that span, Lincoln converted five foul shots as Virginia Union pulled away. Virginia Union made 46.2 percent of its shots in the second half (18-for-39) as it outscored Lincoln, 49-22.
The Lady Lions collected 12 steals. Green and Evans had three steals each for the Lady Lions.
Tonaye Smith led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Tiffany Clarke, Micayala Ricks and Alaura Jones finished with eight points each for the Lady Panthers.
Lincoln returns to action Monday night when it faces CIAA leading scorer Tatiana Ellis and Saint Paul's College in its home finale beginning at 5:30 p.m. The game will be Lincoln's annual Pink Zone contest in conjunction with the WBCA's Breast Cancer campaign to raise awareness.
