FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (January 3, 2009) – Freshman guard Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, MD, Parkside) scored a career-high 22 points, but it was not enough as Lincoln was defeated by Fayetteville State, 99-49, Saturday night at Capel Arena. (BOXSCORE)
This was the first meeting in school history between Lincoln and Fayetteville State. The two teams will meet again on Monday February 3, the day after Super Bowl XLIII, at Lincoln's Manuel Rivero Hall. This was Fayetteville State's third consecutive victory.
Tanina Cook (Landover, MD, Charles H. Flowers), who finished with 12 points, grabbed eight of her game-high 11 rebounds in the first half. This was Cook's first double-double this season and ninth of her career.
DuBose scored 16 points in the second half, including three 3-pointers from more than 24 feet that found the bottom of the net. It was the third time this season, DuBose scored 20 or more points and the 11th time she finished in double digits. DuBose has led Lincoln in scoring six times this season.
Fayetteville State (6-4 overall) placed five players in double figures: LaQuasha Jordan (12 points), Muriel Seabrooks (12 points), Erica Gilley (12 points), Danielle Russell (10) and L'Oreal Price (10). The host Broncos finished with 21 steals and 51 rebounds.
After falling behind, 20-4, Lincoln used a 10-2 spurt that sliced its deficit to 22-14 following a pair of Cook foul shots with eight minutes, one second remaining in the first half. Fayetteville State scored 17 straight points over the next 3:30 to take control.
Lincoln continues its extended road trip with a contest against Bowie State University Tuesday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Bowie (Md.). Fayetteville State travels to Virginia Union Tuesday night for a 5:30 p.m. start.
