LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (September 18, 2008) – Despite a strong showing during its singles matches, the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Chestnut Hill College Thursday afternoon.
Playing with four ladies for the second consecutive match, the Lady Lions received singles victories from Stephanie Henry (No. 2 singles), Tiffany Stewart (No. 3) and Sherell Harwell (No. 4). The teams split the six matches played with Chestnut Hill winning both doubles matches. However, the difference in the match was Lincoln had to forfeit at fifth & sixth singles and third doubles.
Henry continued her strong season by defeating Karen Guwuriro, 8-3. It was Henry's second straight victory. She won her match last week against Lancaster Bible. Stewart also ran her winning streak to two matches by defeating Brittany Parker, 8-4. Harwell earned her first victory of the season by besting Aiesha Grierson, 8-4.
Lincoln was not as fortunate in the doubles matches. The Chestnut Hill tandems of Cara Wallin & Erin Anderson and Sarah Dougherty & Lauren Pescatore won 8-1 and 8-3 respectively. Both teams started the match by playing doubles first and then singles. Lincoln women's tennis coach was pleased with the effort of her team during the match.
“Playing doubles first kind of worked out for us because we won three of the four singles matches we were able to play,” Watson said. “So I am happy. The loss does not reflect the quality of the play points and how hard the ladies battled throughout the match. There were some nice points. Stephanie showed her tournament experience and I believe that was the difference during the match.”
