LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (September 10, 2008) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team made a strong statement during its 5-4 defeat to Lancaster Bible College Thursday afternoon.
Lancaster Bible won the match because Lincoln had to default at No. 5 & No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. The Lions won four of the six matches against the visiting Charges. Senior Alisa Davis and junior Tiffany Stewart each won their singles matches and were victorious at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Stephanie Henry provided a nice glimpse of Lincoln's future by winning her match over Carolyn Kewsinger, 8-0.
Davis started Lincoln off on the right foot with an 8-3 triumph over Lancaster Bible's Michelle Ringler. Stewart added to Lincoln's singles prowess by earning a tough 8-6 victory over Kelsey Scott at No. 3 singles. Senior Sherell Harwell dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision to Lancaster Bible's Ashley Bell at No. 4 singles.
“Alisa has wonderful strokes and it seems like she never misses a ball,” coach Ethel Watson said. “Alisa and Tiffany were both very aggressive with their placement of shots. They were determined to get the last ball back.”
Stewart and Davis had strong chemistry in acing Scott and Bell, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. Harwell and Henry fell short to Kewsinger and Ringler, 8-6, in another terrific match.
“Stephanie was getting into a groove with nice strokes,” Watson said. “She is the future of Lincoln's tennis especially with Alisa and Sherell graduating this year. But the good thing is they are good mentors for Stephanie.”
Lincoln returns to action next Thursday afternoon when it hosts Chestnut Hill College at 3:30 p.m.
