LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (August 31, 2008) – For the second consecutive year, Bloomfield College spoiled the home opener for the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team.
The Deacons (1-0 overall) scored three second half goals to defeat Lincoln, 4-1.
Bloomfield is one of four schools in the Central Colleigiate Athletics Conference (CCAC), Lincoln will play in 2008. The others are Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia and Nyack. Bloomfield defeated Lincoln, 6-1, last year.
The Lady Lions (0-1) started fast as junior Antonia Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) scored 12 minutes into the game to propel her team to a quick, 1-0 advantage. Dating back to last year, Lincoln's last 11 goals have been unassisted.
Bloomfield quietly took control of the match. The Deacons used goals from four different players to open their season with a victory. Erin Mullins tied the game in the 30th minute. Bloomfield took the lead for good four minutes into the second half on Missy Torzeski's goal. Jerrica Lavooy and Shannon Martin added insurance goals for the Deacons.
Lincoln goalie Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) was brilliant in defeat, finishing with 11 saves, many of them of the spectacular variety. After scoring its early goal, Lincoln had trouble generating any consistent offense as it managed three shots in the second half.
The Lady Lions had two golden scoring chances late in the second half. First, Shaynita Blanchard (Portmore, Jamaica/Archbishop Carroll)'s wide open shot hit the top of the post Then, Jones had a potential scoring chance thwarted by Bloomfield goalie Danielle Blumberg, who came out of her net and met Jones as she was about to fire a shot.
Lincoln returns to action Thursday when it travels to meet another member of the CCAC in Chestnut Hill College for a 4:00 p.m. start.
