Cook grabs 500th rebound in setback to nationally-ranked Shaw

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (November 29, 2008) – The short-handed Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team dropped an 82-54 decision to 25th-ranked Shaw University Saturday afternoon at Manuel Rivero Hall. The Lady Lions played without second-leading scorer DeJuana Mosley.(BOXSCORE)

 

Lincoln senior forward and accounting major Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) reached another milestone for the second consecutive game. Cook finished with seven rebounds, including her 500th career carom early in the first half. She has 505 career rebounds. Playing on essentially one leg, Cook led Lincoln (1-6 overall) with 16 points.

 

Lincoln freshman guard Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) reached double figures for the seventh straight game with 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds. DuBose became the second Lincoln freshman in three years to score double figures in her first seven games. Sha'nice Nesmith did the same thing during the 2006-07 season. This was the fourth straight game DuBose led the Lady Lions in scoring. DuBose also finished with a team-high four steals.

 

Lincoln junior guard and health science major Chanelle Harris (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) had a season-high seven assists, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Lincoln freshman guard and sociology major Britny Adams (Bloomingdale, MI/Bloomingdale) tied her career high with eight points.

 

In the first meeting between the two schools, the Lady Lions displayed plenty of heart against the nationally-ranked Bears, trailing 36-25 at intermission and 49-39 with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

 

Shaw (4-0) placed five players in double figures highlighted by 20 points from Celanese Bozeman in 25 minutes. Jessica Davis scored 14 points, Jan'el Baxter added 12 points and Shana Andrus and Rebecca Hyppolite finished with 11 points each. Hyppolite and Baxter grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

 

The Lady Lions return to action Friday night when they play host West Chester in the WCU Alumni Classic at Hollinger Fieldhouse beginning at 8:00 p.m. Lincoln will play its next home game in 45 days on January 13 against Livingstone College.

 

The Lady Bears will take on Saint Augustine's College on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh (NC).
