Brendan Sherman-Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech HS) held regionally ranked Lock Haven University to just three runs and six hits over five innings of work, putting the Lincoln University baseball team in a position to pull off a possible upset but the Lions bats were silenced by the Bald Eagle pitchers as the Lions managed just one hit in a 7-0 opening game loss to the Bald Eagles.
Â
Lincoln also dropped the second game 9-1 to give Lock Haven (#5 in most recent NCBWA Atlantic Region poll) the sweep. The Bald Eagles improve to 25-9 while the Lions have their losing streak extended to 21 games and drop to 5-30 on the season. The 21-game losing streak is currently the longest active streak in NCAA Division II.
Â
Two of the three runs given up by Sherman-Johnson were earned. He also struck out four while walking three batters. He falls to 0-3 on the seasonÂ
Luis Nieves (Staten Island, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) pitched the final two innings, giving up four runs in the seventh on four hits after tossing a perfect sixth inning.
Â
Lock Haven starter tossed three inning of one-hit ball while Tyler Petersheim picked up his first win of the season with four hitless innings to close out the game.
Â
Lincoln's lone hit of the game came in the first inning on an infield hit by
Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy).
Â
Lock Haven scored their first two runs in their first at-bat against Sherman-Johnson. A diving play by third baseman DeVante Parker in the second inning saved another run as Parker snared Cayden Stover's hard grounder to limit what would have been another LHU run and an extra base hit to an infield single.
Â
The Bald Eagles scored their third run in the fifth inning, taking advantage of an outfield error by the Lions as Brady Chappell hit a sacrifice fly with two men in scoring position. Sherman-Johnson then retired the next two batters to end any further threat in the inning.
Â
Lincoln had their best chance to score in the fifth when
Michael Howard (Bronx, N.Y./Utica College) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and
Marquis Coleman (Middle River , Md./Baltimore Polytech HS) drew a walk. Petersheim then retired the next three Lions to lead both runners stranded.
Â
Lock Haven added four runs in the seventh to round out their scoring.
Â
In the nightcap, the Bald Eagles scored in each of the first four innings as they cruised to the 9-1 victory. Â
Marcos Castillo (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications) took the loss for the Lions, dropping to 0-4 on the season. Castillo allowed all nine runs on eight hits, walking seven and striking out four.
Â
Matt Lahn got a spot start and earned the win for the Bald Eagles, tossing four innings of shutout ball while allowing just one hit and striking out four. He also helped his own cause with a three-run home run in the first inning.
Â
Lahn retired the first nine Lincoln batters while he and his teammates produced all the runs they needed with three in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth inning, giving LHU a 9-0 lead before Lincoln even recorded a hit.
Â
Dominic Rheubottom (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech HS) got Lincoln's first hit of the game with a leadoff double to right field in the fourth inning. It was also his first collegiate hit. The next three Lions batters flied out to leave Rheubottom stranded at second.
Â
Parker came in to pitch the fifth inning and closed out the game, holding Lock Haven hitless over the final three innings while walking two and striking out five.
Â
Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) doubled to lead off the fifth inning and moved to third on a balk by new LHU pitcher Nick Stotler. Three batters later
Marquis Coleman (Middle River , Md./Baltimore Polytech HS) was hit by a pitch but was then thrown out trying to steal to end the inning.
Â
The Lions finally broke their string of zeros with a single run in their final at-bat.Â
Joshua Roberson (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley HS) singled with one out, stole second and came around to score on Santiago's single to centerfield, his second hit of the game.Â
Â
The Lions will play their final series of the regular season over the upcoming weekend, hosting Virginia State University. Games are at 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday and again on Sunday, weather permitting.
