DEVON, Pa. — The Lincoln University women's bowling team won its traditional match and took two of six Bakker-style matches versus Cheyney University at Devon Lanes Wednesday afternoon.
In the head-to-head matchup, Lincoln won 747-723 behind a 170 by Tahirah Stewart (Brooklyn, NY/South Shore), but the Lady Lions showcased a balanced attack overall.
Stacey-Ann Smart (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mt. Vernon (NY)) and Emily Valdez (Bronx, NY/Walton) bowled 144 and 143, respectively, and Dania McCarthy (Bronx, NY/Walton) bowled a 133.
Cheyney was rallying late, but Stewart picked up a critical spare in the 10th frame to preserve the victory.
“I love that spot,” Stewart said of being placed in a pressure situation. “I can feel the adrenaline when I try to pick my teammates up.”
Stewart led LU with 11 strikes, six of which came in the Bakker format and five in the traditional.
The Lady Wolves and Lady Lions then played a best of seven Bakker-style scoring system, which CU won, 4-2.
Lincoln won the first game, 145-127 but dropped the next three. In that fourth game, a Lady Wolf picked up a 7-10 split in the ninth frame, upsetting LU, 143-138.
“It was the most the best shot of the day,” LU bowling coach Tim Lewis said. “You just have to tip your hat to her.”
The Lady Lions responded from the potentially deflating adversity by winning the fifth game, 145-120, but lost the sixth game, 157-119.
“I thought we bowled really well today,” Stewart said. “We played well as a team.”
