Thomas Earns Two All-CIAA Honors as Lions Finish Fifth at CIAA Indoor Championships

Senior Mike Brown Qualifys for IC4A Championship

Freshman Isaiah Thomas (Philadelphia, Pa. / Bensalem) earned two all-conference honors as the Lincoln University men's indoor track asnd field team placed fifth at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships on Monday at JDL Fasttrack in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
 
In addition to Thomas's two All-CIAA honors, senior Mike Brown (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) qualified for the IC4A Championships in the 200 meter dash and the Lions set a total of four personal best marks and a pair of season-bests.
 
The Lions finished with 30 total points in the meet, 26 points behind fourth place Johnson C. Smith University.  Virginia State University and defending champion St. Augustine's University finished in a tie for first place with 175.5 points.
 
The Lions earned their first all-conference honor in the last event on the first day of competition on Sunday, placing second in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) with Thomas running the anchor leg.  Lincoln completed the race in 11:07.35, the fastest time run by a DMR team since 2014 and the third fastest in the program's NCAA Division II history.
 
Tyreke Thompson (Capitol Heights, Md./Fairmont Heights) led off the DMR with the 1,200 meter leg, completing it in 3:21.88 and handing off to Nicolas Deleon (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) for the 400 meter leg.  Deleon ran his leg in 53.23 seconds, handing off to Kyuande  Johnson for the 800-meter leg.  Johnson ran 2:05.22 for his leg, handing off to Thomas with the Lions in fifth place.  Thomas proceeded to run the fastest anchor leg in the race, completing the 1,600 in 4:45.87 to finish  the race in second place and put the Lions on the podium.
 
Thomas earned his second silver medal of the meet in the next-to-last event of the competition, the 5,000-meter run.  He crossed the finish line in 16:59.93 and in third place but was moved up when the first place finisher from Virginia Union was disqualified.
 
The freshman distance runner also placed eighth in the mile run on Sunday with a time of 4:50.8.
 
In the 200-meter dash preliminaries, run on Sunday, Brown finished sixth to qualify for Monday's final with a time of 22.46 seconds. (track size conversion = 22.07 seconds)  His time also qualified him for the IC4A Indoor Championship meet that will be held in Boston, Massachusetts on March 2-4, 2018.  In the finals, Brown placed eighth with a time of 22.46 seconds.  The senior sprinter also placed eighth in the 60-yard dash with a time of 7.11 seconds.
 
Lincoln also recorded a season-best time in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the end of Monday's competition, placing sixth overall.  The team of Abdulazeez Idowu (Capitol Heights, Md./Fairmont Heights (Hood College)), Myles Coston (Philadelphia, Pa./G.W. Carver E & S), Johnson and Deleon finished in 3:27.00.
 
Moving over to the field events, the Lions scored points in just one of the five field contests, the shot put.  Solomon Potter (Williamstown, N.J./Timber Creek) placed fifth overall with a toss of 14.03 meters (46'½") while Solomon Bassett (Saginaw, Texas/Boswell) recorded a personal-best toss of 12.48 meters (40'11½") to place seventh.
Heading back to the the track, a pair of Lions set personal-best marks in the 800 meter run.  Lamar McMillan (Mitchellville, Md. / C.H. Flowers) placed second in his preliminary heat with a personal-best time of 2:01.03 on Sunday.  In the finals he finished seventh overall with a time of 2:092.22.  Idowu also ran a personal-best in the 800 with a preliminary time of 2:03.58 placing 11th overall.  Thompson was tenth with a time of 2:03.01.
 
The Lions last personal best set on the track came in the 200 meter dash with Coston placing 11th overall in the preliminaries on Sunday with a personal-best time of 22.68 seconds.
 
The Lions will now start preparations for the upcoming outdoor season while Brown prepares to compete in possibly the final indoor meet of his career at the IC4A Championship in Boston in 18 days.
