Pendleton Scores 1,000th Career Point but Lions Fall to Nationally Ranked Panthers

Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) scored the 1,000th point of her collegiate career with the Lincoln University women's basketball team Wednesday night as the Lions had their seven game win streak snapped by nationally ranked Virginia Union University 68-51.

The loss drops the Lions record to 12-5 overall and 7-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games.  Virginia Union improves to 18-1 overall and 9-0 in league play.

Pendleton entered the game needing just 12 points to become the seventh player in the program's 47-year history to reach 1,000 career points.  Teira's first basket of the game gave the Lions their first lead and she finished the first quarter by making two free throws, giving her nine points and the Lions a 17-16 lead.

The senior small forward reached the 1,000-point mark with 6:18 left in the second quarter, connecting on the first of two free throws.  Pendleton also made the second which tied the game at 21-21.  She went on to score eight more points and finished the game with a team-high 19 points, including a 10-12 effort from the free throw line.

After Pendleton's two free throws tied the game, the Panthers went on a 16-6 flourish to close out the half with a 36-26 lead and a 10-4 spurt to open the third quarter gave VUU a 16 point lead 46-30 with 6:07 left.

The Lions battled and closed the gap to nine, 60-51 with 3:13 left in the game but that would be as close as they would come as the Panthers scored the final eight points of the game.

Pendleton was also one rebound shy of a double-double pulling down nine on the night.  Brianna Logan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley (Siena)) joined Pendleton in double figures with ten points.  Michelle Fitzgerald (Baltimore, Md./Md. Academy of Tech & Health Science (N.C. A & T)) led the team with ten rebounds.

Rachel Pecota led the Panthers, recording a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Alexis  Johnson added 12 points while Shameka McNeill chipped in ten.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, January 27, 2018 when they host Chowan University in a CIAA North Division contest.  Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
