Lions Cruise to Win over Cheyney in "Battle of the First"

The Lincoln University women's basketball team put three players in double figures as they handily defeated Cheyney University in the "Battle of the First"  Monday night at Cheyney University's Alfred Cope Hall.

The Lions improve to 6-15 overall.  Cheyney falls to 3-13.

Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) scored 12 points and led all players with eight rebounds.  De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) also scored 12 points and had a career high six blocks and three assists.  She'cquan Bailey (Denton, Md/Baltimore City CC) added 11 points and a team high five assists.

TaKayla Ellis led the Lady Wolves with nine points and a game high six assists.  Marlon Herring added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Lincoln led wire-to-wire, connecting on seven of their first eight shots from the field to take an 18-8 lead and finished the quarter on a 14-0 flourish to lead 29-8.  The Lions extended their lead as the second quarter wore on taking a 27-point lead into the locker room at the break 44-17.

Pendleton scored the first four Lincoln points of the third quarter igniting an 8-3 spurt that saw them take their biggest lead of the game 52-20 with 5:43 left with Monique Cheek's (Teaneck, NJ/Harford Community College) put back capping the run. Cheyney would go on a 9-2 run to close the gap to 25, 54-29 before Brianna Logan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley (Siena)) drove in for a layup at the buzzer to give the Lions a 56-29 lead after three quarters.

Cheyney would come as close as 21 points in the fourth quarter ,60-39 beofre the Lions closed the game out on an 8-2 run to take home the 27-point victory.
Lincoln recorded their best shooting percentage in a quarter this season in the opening period making 10 of 14 shots for a 71.4% effort.  The Lions finished the game shooting 46.7% (28-60) while Cheyney shot 23.8% (15-63).  Lincoln held a narrow edge on the glass 42-41 and turned in a positive assist/turnover ratio (18/17).

The Lions return to action on Saturday, February 4, 2017 when they host Bowie State University at Manuel Rivero Hall.  Tipoff is at 1:00 p.m.
