Hawks Defeat Lions in Final Game of 2016 Season

Chowan University dealt the Lincoln University football team its ninth loss of the season, defeating the Lions 73-0 in Murfreesboro, North Carolina on Saturday.

The game was the final contest for both teams.  Lincoln finishes the season at 1-9 and 0-7 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games.  Chowan finishes at 6-4 and 4-3 in CIAA action.

Chowan outgained the Lions 312-35 on the ground and 314 -119 in the air to finish the game with 671 total yards.  The 671 yards of offense given up by the Lions is the most since October 11, 2014 when Lincoln allowed 697 yards in a 78-13 loss to Virginia Union.

Freshman quarterback Jason Epps (Bowie, MD/Bowie High School) threw for 119 yards, completing 8 of 33 passes with a pair of interceptions. His longest completion of the day was a throw caught by Noah Perry (Pittsburgh, PA/Clarion University) on the second play of the second quarter that went for 58 yards to the Chowan 36-yard line.  The pass also marked the first time the Lions had the ball in Chowan territory.  The drive ended at the Hawks 17-yard line when Epps was intercepted.

Tyree Lee led the Hawks with 243 yards rushing and two touchdowns.  Jordan Watkins completed 22 of 27 passes for 314 yards and five touchdowns. Ryan Nolan also threw a touchdown pass to go along with one rushing and one receiving touchdown.  Tyrone Carter caught three touchdown passes and had 171 yards receiving.

The Hawks jumped on the board early, taking just 1:48 seconds to score on their opening drive.  Chowan added two more touchdowns before the quarter ended and led 21-0.  Three more touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter by the Hawks made the score 45-0.

In the second half, Lincoln  went three-and-out on their first three possessions and crossed into Hawks territory just once during the half, as the Chowan defense held the Lions to just 56 yards  total offense in the thirty minutes of action.  Chowan added two touchdowns in the third quarter and two more in the fourth to complete the 73-0 rout.

The Lions return to action in 2017.
